East Surry Paces Team Standings, Tie For First In Individual In 1-A Golf

SILER CITY — East Surry’s Johnson York and Craig Wood of Siler City Jordan-Matthews are tied for the individual lead after Monday’s opening day of play in the ninth annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s golf championship at the Siler City Country Club.

York, who tied for 13th in last year’s NCHSAA 1-A tournament, and Wood each shot two-under par 70’s to open a two-shot advantage over Elkin’s Tyler Zimmerman.

John Weldon of East Surry and Stephen Warren of Seven Springs Spring Creek are in fourth with 73’s, three shots off the pace.

Defending team champion East Surry recorded a 299 team score to hold a four-stroke lead over Jordan-Matthews. Mount Airy is in third at 315 and then Cherryville is in fourth but 31 strokes out of first.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

From 1986 through ’97, the Class A and AA golfers competed for a single title in a combined tournament. Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.

Tuesday’s final day of play will send the 1-A golfers off beginning at 8 a.m., with a total of 84 golfers competing.
