Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the final standings in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup competitions for the 2013-2014 sports year.
The Wells Fargo Cup award, sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications.
The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is a companion to the Wells Fargo Cup and recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. Wachovia and now Wells Fargo has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results:
Carolina 1-A: Rosewood finally overtook conference rival Princeton to claim first and win the Conference Cup, thanks to a sweep of the conference outdoor track and field championships and top finishes in baseball and men’s golf. Princeton settled for second, despite finishing first in softball and women’s soccer this spring. Spring Creek held on to finish the year in third, with runner-up finishes in baseball and softball. Conference Standings: Rosewood 98, Princeton 96, Spring Creek 70.5, Lakewood 66.5, James Kenan 54.5, Hobbton 45, North Duplin 42, Neuse Charter 28.
Coastal 10 1-A: Camden wins the Conference Cup, finishing the year strongly with third-place finishes in baseball and softball. Perquimans and Manteo finished in a tie for second, with Perquimans capturing a league title in baseball and also finishing second in softball this spring sports season. Manteo tied for third in both baseball and softball with Conference Cup winner Camden. Coastal Plains 1-A: Lejeune recaptured the top spot and with it took the Conference Cup, sweeping the conference outdoor track and field championships and finishing first in men’s golf. Previous conference leader East Carteret settled for second with a first-place finish in baseball, and just beat out Pamlico, who finished the year third. North Central 1-A: By the narrowest of margins, Franklin Academy beat out previous leader Raleigh Charter to take the Conference Cup, thanks to championships in men’s golf and softball, and a second-place finish in women’s soccer. Raleigh Charter settled for second, despite finishing first in women’s soccer and men’s tennis in the spring. Voyager finished closely behind the top two teams in third, capturing a conference crown in baseball and finishing second in men’s golf. Conference Standings: Franklin Academy 64, Raleigh Charter 62.5, Voyager Academy 60, Roxboro Community 41, Woods Charter 28, River Mill Academy 27, Kestrel Heights 26, East Wake Academy 17.5.
Northwest 1-A: The Conference Cup goes to Bishop McGuinness, who once again dominated the sports season with spring championships in men’s golf, women’s soccer, and men’s tennis. Mount Airy held on to finish second, thanks to a second-place finish in men’s tennis and a third-place finish in baseball. Third place went to Easy Surry, who won a league title in baseball as well as finished second in women’s soccer this spring. Smoky Mountain 1-A: After leading the way the entire year, Swain claimed the Conference Cup, finishing second in softball and men’s golf this spring. Murphy took back second to beat out Hayesville as the runner up in the conference, thanks to top finishes in men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Hayesville wound up third, winning a league title in men’s golf this spring. Southern Piedmont 1-A: A commanding spring season earned the Community School of Davidson the Conference Cup, capturing championships in both men’s soccer and men’s tennis. Thomas Jefferson just beat out third-place finisher Lincoln Charter to take second, thanks to a runner-up finish in men’s outdoor track and field. Lincoln Charter performed well this spring with a conference crown in softball, and second-place finishes in baseball and women’s outdoor track and field. Tar Roanoke 1-A: Granville Central continued its top form in the spring, finishing first in baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, and captured the Conference Cup. Louisburg tied for first with the top school in both baseball and softball, finishing the year in second. KIPP Pride finished third with runner-up finishes in men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Two Rivers 1-A: With top finishes in baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, Riverside (Martin) ended the year on top and wins the Conference Cup. Tarboro finished second with runner-up performances in baseball and men’s tennis. Third place went to South Creek, which tied for first in softball with Riverside-Martin and also finished third in baseball this spring. Yadkin Valley 1-A: Gray Stone Day capturesd the Conference Cup, reclaiming the top spot after being tied for third after the winter season. Gray Stone finished first in men’s tennis and men’s golf this spring. Union Academy wound up as the runner-up, winning a conference crown in women’s golf. Previous conference frontrunner North Stanly finished the year in third. Class 1-A/2-A Conference Results:
Four County 1-A/2-A: The Conference Cup belongs to Clinton, which finished the year strong with another solid sports season, consisting of first-place finishes in women’s soccer and men’s golf. Heide Trask surged remarkably from second-to-last in the conference to finish the year tied for second with Wallace-Rose Hill. Trask dominated the spring sports season with a sweep of the outdoor track and field championships and a top finish in softball. Conference Standings: Clinton 91.5, Heide Trask 75, Wallace-Rose Hill 75, West Bladen 66, Midway 62, East Bladen 55.5, Pender 52.5, Union 46.5.
Mountain Valley 1-A/2-A: With a top finish in men’s tennis and second-place performances in men’s golf and women’s outdoor track and field, Elkin remained on top to win the Conference Cup. Second place wemt to Wilkes Central, which finished first in baseball and second in men’s tennis. Ashe County wound up third with a second-place finish in men’s outdoor track and field. Three Rivers 1-A/2-A: The top three schools remained unchanged after the spring sports season and that means the Conference Cup for top school Whiteville, which finished first in softball and women’s soccer. Fairmont held off third-place finisher Red Springs, the conference men’s tennis champion, to finish second in the conference thanks to a league title in baseball. Conference Standings: Whiteville 120, Fairmont 97.5, Red Springs 97, South Columbus 81, St. Paul’s 77.5, East Columbus 74, South Robeson 60.5, West Columbus 51.5.
Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: Hendersonville reclaimed the top spot after the spring and won the Conference Cup, beating out previous conference frontrunner Polk County thanks to league titles in baseball, men’s tennis, and women’s outdoor track and field. Polk County settled for second despite spring championships in women’s soccer and men’s outdoor track and field. Charles D. Owen surged from its previous sixth-place position to finish the year in a tie for third with Avery County. Owen tied for first in women’s soccer with Polk County and also finished second in men’s outdoor track and field. Conference Standings: Hendersonville 170, Polk County 168.5, Charles D. Class 2-A Conference Results:
Central Carolina 2-A: Top finishes in men’s golf and men’s tennis as well as a runner-up finish in women’s soccer solidified Salisbury’s Conference Cup victory. West Davidson was the runner-up with spring championships in women’s soccer and women’s outdoor track and field, and second-place performances in baseball, softball, men’s golf, and men’s tennis. East Davidson rounds out the top three, finishing first in baseball and softball this spring. Conference Standings: Salisbury 164.5, West Davidson 156, East Davidson 145.5, Lexington 129, North Rowan 126.5, Thomasville 96.5.
East Central 2-A: Croatan secured the Conference Cup this spring with league titles in baseball, women’s soccer, and men’s tennis. Second-place finisher East Duplin finished first in men’s golf and second in softball, while North Brunswick finished first in softball and tied for first in baseball with Croatan to round out the top three. Conference Standings: Croatan 156, East Duplin 149, North Brunswick 139.5, Northside 129, Dixon 126.5, Southwest Onslow 124.
Eastern Carolina 2-A: Previous fourth-place South Lenoir surged in the spring with a top finish in softball and a second-place finish in men’s outdoor track and field to capture the Conference Cup. Ayden-Grifton moved up one spot to finish the year second, thanks to runner-up performances in baseball and women’s outdoor track and field. The year ended in a tie for third place between previous conference leader North Lenoir and Kinston. Conference Standings: South Lenoir 54, Ayden-Grifton 50, North Lenoir 49, Kinston 49, Greene Central 44, Goldsboro 43.
Eastern Plains 2-A: After leading the way through the winter season, Washington continued its top form and took the Conference Cup, finishing first in softball, men’s tennis, women’s soccer, and men’s outdoor track and field. Beddingfield finished close behind in second, tying for first with Washington in softball, and also finishing second in women’s soccer as well as men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. North Pitt finished third, just edging out previous third-place Farmville Central. Conference Standings: Washington 69.5, Beddingfield 64, North Pitt 52, Farmville Central 49.5, North Johnston 45.5, SouthWest Edgecombe 30.5.
Mid-State 2-A: Carrboro captured the Conference Cup, continuing its dominance with another strong sports season. The Cup winner won spring championships in men’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s soccer, and both men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Jordan-Matthews broke its winter deadlock with Reidsville to finish in sole possession of second, thanks to top finishes in baseball and softball, and a runner-up finish in men’s outdoor track and field. Reidsville finished the year in a tie for third with Graham, despite taking second in baseball, men’s tennis, and women’s soccer this spring. Conference Standings: Carrboro 94, Jordan-Matthews 70, Reidsville 57, Graham 57, Cummings 43, Bartlett Yancey 38.
Northern Carolina 2-A: The North Carolina School of Science and Math was able to break its winter deadlock with Franklinton to win the Conference Cup, thanks to a top finish in men’s tennis, and runner-up performances in men’s golf and men’s outdoor track and field. Bunn captured spring championships in baseball, softball, and men’s golf to move up one spot and finish as the runner up in the conference. Franklinton fell to third despite tying with NCSSM in men’s tennis, men’s golf, and men’s outdoor track and field. Conference Standings: NCSSM 91, Bunn 84, Franklinton 79, South Granville 69, Roanoke Rapids 68, Durham School of the Arts 64, Southern Vance 49, Warren County 34.
Northeastern Coastal 2-A: First Flight, after trailing the entire year, finally overcame conference opponent Northeastern and captured the Conference Cup with league titles in men’s tennis and women’s soccer, and a second-place finish in men’s golf. Northeastern finished as the conference runner-up, just edging out third-place finisher Currituck thanks to a spring championship in softball and a second-place finish in men’s outdoor track and field. Currituck had a stellar spring season, consisting of conference crowns in baseball, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Conference Standings: First Flight 96, Northeastern 94, Currituck 93, Edenton 69, Pasquotank 52, Hertford County 40, Bertie 26.
PAC 6 2-A: With a share of the conference baseball championship and second-place finishes in women’s soccer, men’s tennis, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, Randleman was able to surpass previous frontrunner Wheatmore to claim the Conference Cup. Wheatmore settled for second, tying for first in softball and finishing third in men’s golf, men’s tennis, and women’s outdoor track and field. Trinity placed third, thanks to championships in women’s soccer and men’s tennis. Conference Standings: Randleman 78.5, Wheatmore 75.5, Trinity 67, Providence Grove 60.5, Eastern Randolph 45, High Point Andrews 42.5.
Rocky River 2-A: The top three schools finish the year only separated by a single point, with Central Academy winning the Conference Cup. The top school finished first in men’s tennis and second in men’s golf and women’s soccer this spring. Mount Pleasant, previously fourth in the conference, finished as the conference runner-up, just edging out Parkwood thanks to top finishes in baseball and men’s outdoor track and field, as well as a second-place finish in women’s outdoor track and field. Parkwood wound up third with spring championships in men’s golf and women’s soccer, and a runner-up performance in softball. Conference Standings: Central Academy 69, Mount Pleasant 68.5, Parkwood 68, West Stanly 61.5, Forest Hills 57.5, Monroe 44.5.
Southern District 7 2-A: The year-long conference frontrunner secured the Conference Cup as Newton-Conover finished the year strong with league titles in men’s tennis, men’s golf, and women’s soccer. Second place belonged to East Lincoln, which finished first in women’s soccer and women’s outdoor track and field. Bandys finished the year in third with second-place performances in baseball and men’s golf. Western Piedmont 2-A: West Stokes wins the Conference Cup, taking the top spot from Surry Central thanks to spring championships in baseball, men’s tennis, and women’s soccer. Surry Central settled for second with a runner-up finish in men’s tennis. Forbush finished only one point behind in third, finishing first in softball and second in men’s golf and women’s soccer this spring. Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results:
Big South 2-A/3-A: Conference championships in men’s tennis and women’s soccer as well as second-place finishes in men’s and women’s outdoor track and field procure the Conference Cup for Ashbrook. Forestview, who was fourth after the winter season, finished second thanks to a sweep of the conference outdoor track and field championships, a first-place finish in men’s golf, and second-place performances in baseball and men’s tennis. Lake Norman Charter fell one spot and wound up in third, tying with Cup winner Ashbrook for first in women’s soccer this spring. Conference Standings: Ashbrook 209.5, Forestview 203, Lake Norman Charter 201, South Point 197, East Gaston 174.5, North Gaston 159, Hunter Huss 130.5, Stuart Cramer 116.5.
South Mountain Athletic 2-A/3-A: Shelby secured the Conference Cup with spring titles in men’s golf and men’s outdoor track and field, and a second-place performance in women’s soccer. Kings Mountain was the runner up, finishing first in men’s tennis and second in softball this spring. Crest settled for third with runner-up performances in men’s golf and men’s outdoor track and field. Conference Standings: Shelby 129, Kings Mountain 109, Crest 108, J.C. Western North Carolina Athletic 2-A/3-A: Both West Henderson and Pisgah had solid spring seasons, but the conference frontrunner West Henderson proved too tough for Pisgah and took home the Conference Cup. West Henderson finished first in softball and second in baseball, men’s tennis, and women’s outdoor track and field, while runner-up Pisgah tied for first in softball with West Henderson, and also won league titles in baseball and men’s golf. Franklin finished third with conference crowns in women’s soccer and men’s outdoor track and field. Class 3-A Conference Results:
Big 8 3-A: A spring championship in men’s outdoor track and field, a tie for first in women’s soccer, and runner-up finishes in baseball, men’s tennis, and women’s outdoor track and field secured the Conference Cup for Chapel Hill. Cardinal Gibbons settled for second despite winning conference crowns in men’s tennis, men’s golf, and women’s outdoor track and field, as well as a tie for first in women’s soccer with Chapel Hill. Cedar Ridge held off Northwood to finish third, thanks to a second-place performance in men’s outdoor track and field. Big East 3-A: Hunt tied for first in both softball and women’s soccer, and finished second in men’s golf and men’s tennis to maintain its top form and take the Conference Cup. Fike finished second, tying for first with Hunt in women’s soccer and finishing first in men’s golf. Third place went to Rocky Mount, which swept the conference outdoor track and field championships. Cape Fear Valley 3-A: Terry Sanford took the Conference Cup, remaining on top after the spring season thanks to league titles in baseball, men’s tennis, and men’s outdoor track and field. Second place went to Union Pines, which finished first in women’s soccer and women’s outdoor track and field. Lee County captured third, finishing first in men’s golf and second in softball this spring. Coastal 3-A: In a fierce fight for first and the Conference Cup, Swansboro just barely edged out rival Jacksonville, winning the Cup by a single point thanks to spring championships in softball, women’s outdoor track and field, and women’s soccer. Runner-up Jacksonville won a share of the conference women’s soccer title, as well as taking first in baseball, men’s golf, men’s tennis, and men’s outdoor track and field. West Carteret finished in third, with second-place performances in men’s tennis, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Mid Piedmont 3-A: Ledford leads the conference through the final sports season and wins the Conference Cup with a first-place finish in softball, and second-place finishes in men’s golf and women’s outdoor track and field. Asheboro moved up one place and edged out Central Davidson to finish second, thanks to a league title in men’s outdoor track and field and a runner-up performance in men’s tennis. Central Davidson wound up third with a second-place finish in women’s soccer this spring. Mid State 3-A: Northern Guilford’s year-long conference dominance fittingly ends with the Conference Cup, as the top school finished first in baseball, men’s tennis, men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, and men’s outdoor track and field this spring. Walter Williams broke the winter tie with Eastern Alamance to finish in sole possession of second, thanks to a championship in softball and runner-up finishes in men’s golf, women’s soccer, and women’s outdoor track and field. Third place went to Eastern Alamance, which finished second in lacrosse. Roberson on top and earned the school the Conference Cup. A.C Reynolds finished second, winning a championship in women’s soccer and finishing second in softball and women’s outdoor track and field. Third place narrowly went to Asheville, edging out North Buncombe thanks to runner-up finishes in men’s golf, women’s soccer, and men’s outdoor track and field. Conference Standings: T.C. Third-place finisher Concord won a league title in men’s outdoor track and field this spring. Weddington settled for second with runner-up finishes in men’s tennis, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Two Rivers 3-A: Corinth Holders captured the Conference Cup, finishing first in men’s tennis and men’s golf, and second in women’s outdoor track and field this spring. Cleveland held on to finish the year in second, with a sweep of the outdoor track and field championships, first-place finishes in women’s soccer and softball, and second-place performances in men’s tennis and men’s golf. Third place belongs to Triton, which held off the rest of the pack to round out the top three schools. Class 3-A/4-A Conference Results:
Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A: With spring championships in men’s golf and women’s soccer, and second-place performances in baseball and softball, D.H. Conley won the Conference Cup after leading all year. New Bern and J.H. Rose finished in a tie for second as J.H. Rose drew level with New Bern, thanks to league titles in baseball and men’s tennis. New Bern finished second in men’s golf and women’s soccer this spring. Conference Standings: D.H. Conley 95, J.H. Rose 90, New Bern 90, South Central 81, C.B. Mideastern 3-A/4-A: Hoggard held on to first through the spring season to take the Conference Cup, with championships in men’s tennis, women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s lacrosse. League titles in baseball and women’s track helped keep New Hanover in second, where it finished the year. Ashley and Laney finish close behind New Hanover in a tie for third. Ashley finished first in softball and men’s outdoor track and field, while Laney captured conference crowns in softball and men’s golf this spring. North Piedmont 3-A/4-A: Another dominant sport season secured the Conference Cup for Lake Norman, which finished first in men’s tennis, women’s soccer, and women’s outdoor track and field, and second in baseball and men’s outdoor track and field. Mooresville moved up from its previous fourth-place position to finish second, thanks to a top finish in men’s outdoor track and field, and runner-up finishes in men’s tennis and women’s outdoor track and field. Alexander Central holds on to finish third with conference crowns in baseball and softball. All Metro 4-A: Page ends the year on top and takes the Conference Cup, winning league titles in men’s tennis and men’s golf as well as finishing second in baseball and women’s soccer. Greater Neuse River 4-A: The back-and-forth between Garner and Clayton continued through spring with Garner making the final statement by capturing the Conference Cup, thanks to first-place finishes in softball and women’s soccer. Clayton finished a close second, winning championships in baseball and men’s tennis this spring. West Johnston held on to third with a solid spring season consisting of a tie for first in women’s soccer with Garner, and second-place performances in softball, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. MeCKa 4-A: W.A. Hough wins the Conference Cup, putting an exclamation point on the year with a stellar spring season consisting of championships in baseball, men’s tennis, and men’s golf. Jay M. Robinson is the runner up, finishing first in softball and second in men’s outdoor track and field this spring. Mallard Creek passed Hopewell to finish the year in third, thanks to a sweep of the conference outdoor track and field championships. Conference Standings: W.A. Hough 137.5, Jay M. Mid-South 4-A: Jack Britt’s top form continued through the spring as the top school claimed the Conference Cup with league titles in men’s golf and women’s soccer, and runner-up finishes in men’s tennis and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The winter tie between South View and Pine Forest has been broken, as South View finished the year in sole possession of second, thanks to a sweep of the conference outdoor track and field championships, and a second-place finish in softball. PAC 6 4-A: East Chapel Hill is able to beat out conference rival Jordan and claim the Conference Cup, breaking the winter between the two schools thanks to top finishes in men’s golf, men’s lacrosse, and men’s tennis. Jordan settles for second despite finishing first in women’s soccer and men’s outdoor track and field this spring. Riverside finishes the year in third with a first-place finish in baseball. Piedmont Triad 4-A: Its another stellar sports season for Northwest Guilford as the top school deservedly wins the Conference Cup. Northwest Guilford finished first in baseball, softball, men’s tennis, men’s lacrosse, and men’s golf this spring. Runner-up finisher Ragsdale tied with Northwest Guilford for second in women’s lacrosse, as well as finished first in men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, and second in men’s golf. East Forysth moves up one spot to finish the year in third, thanks to top finishes in women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer, and runner-up performances in men’s lacrosse and women’s outdoor track and field. SoMeck 8 4-A: Ardrey Kell used the spring sports season to separate itself from the rest of the pack and claim the Conference Cup. The top school finished first in baseball, softball, men’s golf, and men’s outdoor track and field. Providence stepped into the second-place spot where it finished the year, winning a championship in women’s soccer, and finishing second in baseball and men’s outdoor track and field. Charlotte Catholic fell one spot and finishes the year in third, despite finishing first in men’s tennis and second in women’s soccer this spring. Southeastern 4-A: A dominant spring season to match its formidable performance earlier earned Pinecrest the Conference Cup. The top school’s spring campaign consisted of championships in men’s golf, men’s tennis, and men’s outdoor track and field, as well as second-place finishes in softball, women’s soccer, and women’s outdoor track and field. Richmond was the runner-up, with conference crowns in baseball and softball, and a second-place performance in men’s tennis. Third place goes to Scotland, which finished second in men’s golf and men’s outdoor track and field. David Butler earned runner-up honors with a championship in men’s outdoor track and field, and a second-place finish in women’s outdoor track and field. Third place belongs to Porter Ridge, who finished first in both softball and men’s golf this spring.
