CHARLOTTE– Former high school and collegiate basketball coach Robert Moore died on Sunday at the age of 73, according to multiple media reports.
Moore is best known in some circles for building both Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union into CIAA championship contenders. He had a college coaching mark of 238-145, including a 145-101 mark leading Johnson C. Smith from 1978-87.
On the high school level, he led Winston-Salem Atkins to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men's basketball title in 1969. He was the first African-American coach to take a team to an NCHSAA championship after the North Carolina High School Athletic Conerence folded and those NCHSAC member schools joined the NCHSAA.
Moore was a native of Asheville whose Atkins Camels lost in the 1968 playoffs to West Charlotte and then posted a 24-0 mark to win it all the following year. He was an advocate of fast-paced, high scoring basketball.
His father, Clarence Moore, is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame from the class of 2003.
