Southern Alamance High School and the Southern Alamance Patriot Booster Club have announced the sixth class of the Southern Alamance High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
All inductees went into the Hall in late September. The official ceremony and dinner were held at the Ramada Inn in Burlington and they were recognized at halftime of the Southern Alamance football game against Graham.
The inductees are:
SUSAN WILSON VINCENT: Susan is a 1980 Southern graduate inducted as an athlete. She earned 11 varsity letters during her high school career and was an eight-time all-conference performer, including honors in volleyball, basketball and softball.
During her senior season, she earned all-conference honors in all three sport, averaging 23 points per game while also earning league MVP in softball. Susan took her talents to Elon University on a Basketball/Softball scholarship. She double majored in Accounting/Business with a minor in Computer Science graduating in 1984. As a senior at Elon, she played volleyball, basketball and softball. earning four team MVP honors in softball.
After graduation from college, Susan and her husband help start the girls’ basketball, volleyball and golf programs at Burlington Christian Academy. She is currently coaching the varsity and junior varsity girls’ basketball teams at Burlington Christian Academy. She is currently also the Director of Partner Services for Intacct Software in San Jose, CA.
WES BERRIER: Wes is a 1986 Southern graduate inducted as an athlete. He earned all-conference honors a total of five times between football and wrestling. Berrier was the 1985 Mid-State Defensive Player of the Year in Football and later that year he earned a Mid-State Conference championship in wrestling.
Berrier was named to the East team in the North Carolina Coaches Association all-star games as a senior, and he also was Southern’s most valuable wrestler in 1986. After high school Wes played football at Appalachian State University from 1986-1988 under Coach Sparky Woods.
West served five years in the United States Army as an air traffic controller while earning a degree in business at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Wes is currently teaching and coaching. He has taught and coached in Randolph, Asheboro and Alamance school systems for the past 12 years and has earned his Masters in Administration.
BRENDA UNDERHILL: Underhill was inducted as a coach and supporter, as she started working at Southern Alamance in the fall of 1976. Her first assignment with athletics was working with the Trackettes during the 1978-79 school year, a group of girls that helped out with track meets. She also became the scorekeeper and announcer for track and continued to serve in this capacity until 2008. Brenda was also named the official scorekeeper for the Mid-State 3A conference meets.
In the 1979-80 school year, she started working with the women’s track team. She worked with the track team until 1983. During that time she was doing double duty as she became the varsity cheerleader coach.
In the fall of 2000 Brenda retired from her coaching duties and began to focus on different roles, including working the pass gate and ticket sales for both varsity and JV football games. In 2003 and 2012, Brenda received the Outstanding Service Award from the Southern Alamance athletic department and continues to be the familiar face at the front gate to welcome our Southern football fans, visiting fans and media.
1990 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SOFTBALL TEAM: the 1990 softball team won the third state championship in school history that year. The complied a 23-2 season record, sweeping Canton Pisgah in a best of 3 series for the state title by scores of 2-0 and 7-3.
Members of the 1990 team were: Tanya Parrish, India Steele, Tracy Herring, Kelly Braxton, Laura Stanley, Nikki Stanfield, Christi Langley, Kim Stutts, Shelia Dove, Michelle Schronce, Kasey Griffin, Wendy Powers, Regina Herring, Julie McVey, Jenny Coble, Sherry Briggs, Lorrie Parrish, assistant coach Danny Pope and head coach Greg Thomas.
