CHAPEL HILL— Malia Ellington of Community School of Davidson and John Hatala of Marvin Ridge High School in Waxhaw are the winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.
Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Ellington had an outstanding performance last weekend in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1-A track and field championships at North Carolina A&T, earning Most Valuable Performer honors for the second year in a row at the state meet. Ellington won individual state titles in three events in a grueling day, including the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters, and ran the anchor leg on the victorious four by 400 relay team.
She accounted for most of CSD’s team points as the squad finished second, eight points behind state champ Winston-Salem Prep in the standings.
Hatala led Marvin Ridge to a thrilling 5-4 decision over Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons in the NCHSAA state 3-A men’s dual team tennis championship at the Burlington Tennis Center. Hatala, MVP of the final, won his match at number two singles and then combined with Avanish Madhavaram at number one doubles in what proved to be the clincher.
The Marvin Ridge team prevailed 11-10 in a decisive pro set, winning a tiebreaker to give the Mavericks the championship.
TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during a SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients are also recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
