Heritage Huskies softball wraps up a record-breaking year

Heritage softball's season came to an end in the first round of the 4A playoffs as conference rival Millbrook nipped the Huskies 6-5. The loss closed the books on what can only be described as a record setting season.

Head Coach Mark Downing submitted the list of team and individual records for the Huskies to be added to the NCHSAA State Record book as well as the appropriate documentation at the conclusion of the season, and the list was quite impressive.

The Huskies hit 63 doubles as a team on the season, which is good enough for 10th place all time in state fast-pitch history. Many of those 63 doubles came in a single game, as Heritage belted 8 doubles in an April 19th game against Sanderson, which ties them for second all-time in single game doubles with Central Cabarrus' 2001 squad.

Heritage also tied the state record for consecutive home runs, hitting three in a row against Rolesville on March 18, 2015 when Jordan Gontram, Laura Williams and Grace Valchar all took single-swing round-trippers in the top of the 4th inning.

A great career came to a close as well as Huskies senior Jordan Gontram finished her career with a career batting average of .469, good for 18th all-time in state fast-pitch history. She also hit 37 career doubles, placing her 10th all-time for doubles in a career. Her 136 runs batted in places her 8th on the state's career list in the category.

In addition to one great career closing, another seems to have kicked into high gear as sophomore Imani Rochelle made the record book twice in her second varsity campaign. Rochelle tied the state record for triples in a single game with three triples against Leesville Road on April 15, 2016. The Huskies won the game 20-7. She also carries a 20 consecutive-game hit streak into her junior season, tying her for 15th all time on the state's list in the category.
