Long-time Forsyth County Coaching legend Jack Musten passes away

KERNERSVILLE – A legend in the Triad coaching community, Jack Musten, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2016. After graduating from Kernersville High School and stops at Wingate and Elon Colleges, Musten had a long and productive career as a teacher, coach and administrator. 

He served as the head basketball and baseball coach at Glenn High School in Kernersville from 1955-1962 before moving on to East Forsyth where he was the head baseball coach from 1962-1985. Musten was athletic director at the school for six of those years and was responsible for starting the school's chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

During six years at Glenn, his basketball teams made the state playoffs in two seasons and his baseball teams won five straight conference championships. In one four-year period at the school the baseball team went 108-12, as Coach Musten was named the Forsyth County Coach of the Year twice during the span.

At East Forsyth he won seven conference championships in baseball and his teams qualified for the state playoffs nine times. He even coached the 1952 North Carolina All-Star Basketball Team. In his obituary, it paints the picture of a true coach by saying, "His greatest reward came from the testimonies of former students who credited bouth their successses and their ability to make important life decisions to his influence. Many have claimed that he was their greatest role model as a father, teacher, and mentor."

Coach Musten has been named to several different Hall of Fames including the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1985, the Glenn High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, the Wingate University Sports Hall of Fame in 1993, and in 1986 East Forsyth named the school's new gymnasium in his honor.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Frances Musten, three brothers: Carl Bynum, J.C., and Waymer Musten, and two sisters: Louise Crutchfield and Mildred Berrier.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Wilson Musten, a son, Danny Lee Musten (Linda) of Raleigh, three grandchildren: Laura Sink (Erik), Sarah Musten, and Evan Musten, one great grandchild, Stetson, a sister, Becky Swaim (Wade), three step-children: Jill Hoppa, Heather Shoaf, and Tim Shoaf, and five step-grandchildren: Jake, Jerry, Zach, Camden, and Mason.

A funeral service officiated by Dr. Stephen Martin will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Kernersville. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2016 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel.
