STUDENTS FROM NASH CENTRAL & MILLBROOK EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Michaela Nelms from Nash Central High School and Jordan Whitfield from Millbrook High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Nelms, a senior on the Bulldogs women’s basketball team surpassed 1,000 career points in helping lead her team past Hunt and Southern Nash. She scored 44 points on the week with 13 rebounds, 9 assists and 9 steals. She also won the NCHSAA 3A Indoor Track State Championship in the 300-meter dash, setting a new classification meet record with a time of :40.64 seconds. Nelms also ran with the victorious 4 X 200 Relay and 4 X 400 relay winning a total of three gold medals on the weekend.

Whitfield, a senior on the Millbrook basketball team has averaged a Cap 8 Conference leading 28 points per game over the last two weeks. Last week he helped the Wildcats past Leesville Road and Sanderson averaging 25 points in the two contests. He scored 21 field goals in just 36 attempts over the week. He added to his performance in the Friday win over Sanderson with a season-high eight assists. Whitfield has signed to play next season at Campbell University.

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
