Page’s Strandberg, Myers Park Team Take NCHSAA 4-A Women’s Golf Honors

PINEHURST – Junior Julia Strandberg of Greensboro Page shot a two-over par 74 on Tuesday and held on to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championship at Pinehurst number five.

Strandburg was among three golfers tied for the lead after the first round in the 36-hole event on the par 72, 5,709-yard layout. But her closing round was good enough for a two-shot advantage over a trio of golfers, including Raleigh Leesville Road’s Jennifer O’Connor, Morrisville Green Hope’s Colleen Estes and Virginia Mayer of Charlotte Myers Park.

Strandburg, Estes and Mayer shared the lead after Monday’s play, while O’Connor had won the individual title back in 2004.

Defending champion Julie Saleeby of Raleigh Broughton finished in a tie for sixth with Chapel Hill’s Michelle Ahn and behind fifth-place finisher Erica Creed of Northwest Guilford.

Myers Park and Asheville A.C. Reynolds were knotted for the team lead after the first day, but Myers Park tallied a 154 team score Tuesday to finish at 311, nine shots ahead of Northwest Guilford. Reynolds fell to fifth, training Gastonia Ashbrook and Greensboro Page.

The best two scores of a team counted toward the team total. A total of 80 golfers and 25 teams competed in the event.

Wendy’s and the Carolina Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
