Franklin High School Honors Hall of Fame Inductees

       FRANKLIN– Franklin High School has inducted three individuals into its athletic hall of fame.

       The inductions occurred during ceremonies prior to a recent Franklin home football game, according to a report in the Asheville Citizen-Times.

       Here is a look at the newest members of the Franklin Hall of Fame:

       Mary Lou Cabe (Zeller):  a forward during the six-player era in  women’s high school basketball who was an All-Smoky Mountain Conference selection as a junior in the 1959-1960 season. She helped the Panthers win the 1960-61 regular season title the eastern division of the Smoky Mountain Conference, earning All-Conference honors as a senior and the conference’s Most Valuable Player award. It was the first time a Franklin athlete had ever received the honor.

       She passed away on September 16, 2014, in Eustis, Florida

       Coach Bill Dyar: Dyer served as Franklin’s track and field coach from 1976-1979, leading the team to Smoky Mountain Conference championships each year.  He served as athletic director from 1975-79. He coached the Smoky Mountain Conference men’s track and field champions 1976-1979 and also was head football coach from 1974 to ’78, leading the team to a state title in ’76 and the first state championship in any sport in Swain history.

      He also started the school chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as well as beginning the men’s cross country program, women’s track and field and wrestling.

      Walter Wright: served as Co-Captain of the state championship-winning football team in 1976, earning all-conference honors twice as a linebacker and was an all-Western North Carolina and all-state offensive lineman as an end in 1976.

      He signed a grant-in-aid to play football at Western Carolina University.
