1A Men’s Basketball Championship Recap | Wilson Prep downs Lincoln Charter 65-58 for first championship in school history

TRINITY, NC – Wilson Prep won the school’s first NCHSAA State Championship in any sport, taking down Lincoln Charter 65-58 in an exciting game that saw Wilson Prep pull away late. Up 57-54 with 1:55 to go, the Tigers used an 8-0 run to ice the game.

Devyn Bullock was the floor leader for Wilson Prep. His 13 points and seven rebounds were a catalyst to the victory. Bullock was selected as the Charlie Adams 1A Men’s Basketball Championship Most Valuable Player for his efforts.

Two other Tigers were in double figures on the night. Nasiar Blackston had 12 points, three rebounds and five assists to earn Most Outstanding Player honors for Wilson Prep. Eric Wynn worked hard in the paint, dropping 17 points and pulling down 10 boards in the game.

Lincoln Charter led most of the way, holding the lead for almost 27 of the game’s 32 minutes. The Eagles went cold from three in the second half, failing to connect on any of their six three-point attempts in the final half of play. They also were out rebounded 41-29, contributing to the shooting woes down the stretch.

The Eagles were led by Sam Cogan, who scored 15 points in the game, adding six rebounds. He was named the Most Outstanding Player for Lincoln Charter. Elijah Burnette also added 15 points and three assists for the Eagles while Troy Fulton picked up 12 points in the game.

Wilson Prep finished 7-2 on the season. The Tigers won the only two conference games of the year, beating the only other team in the Tar Roanoke 1A fielding a team this year, North Edgecombe, twice during the season. The Tigers advanced to the State Championship and Regional Finals for the first time in program history, despite missing more than a month of games during the season for COVID-19 cancellations and a quarantine.

Lincoln Charter finished the year 16-3. The Eagles were 11-1 and champions of the Southern Piedmont 1A for the eighth year in a row. Lincoln Charter won the Western Regional for the second time in program history, returning to the State Championship Game for the first time since 2017 when they defeated Kestrel Heights.

The NCHSAA is committed to promoting and honoring outstanding sportsmanship and has partnered with the NC Farm Bureau to award Sportsmanship Awards to one athlete from each of the participating teams to recognize excellence in sportsmanship throughout the year. The Sportsmanship Award winners for the game were Malik Bryant from Wilson Prep and Sam Bruce from Lincoln Charter.
