2018 MEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDE IN PINEHURST

The 2018 NCHSAA Men's Golf Championships are underway in Pinehurst. The two-day tournament was held at four different sites, with all four classificiations competing simultaneously. Foxfire Golf & Resort's Red Course hosted the 1A Championships. Country Club of Whispering Pines hosted the 2A Championships. Longleaf Golf and Family Club hosted the 3A Championships. Pinehurst No. 6 hosted the 4A Championships.

FOXFIRE VILLAGE, NC – The NCHSAA 1A Men’s Golf championship came to an exciting end at Foxfire Resort’s Red Fox Course. Highland Tech’s Addison Beam held off Thomas Jefferson’s Pierce Robinson by a single shot to win the individual crown. 

Beam started the day in third place, two shots back of Robinson who was two shots in back of William Crook from Lincoln Charter. Beam opened the round with a birdie on the par-4 first hole before carding back-to-back bogeys on the next two holes. He turned things around on the par-5 fourth hole with an eagle and another birdie on the sixth hole. After some more up-and- down play through the middle holes, Beam steadied himself for the stretch run and played the final six holes with two birdies and a quartet of pars on his way to a 1-over 73 for the round and a 6-over 150 for the tournament. 

Robinson was a little steadier throughout the day, but ultimately it was a pair of double bogeys on his card that cost him. Robinson took double on the par-3 fifth hole and the par-4 sixteenth hole. Otherwise he played even with four birdies and four bogeys, carding a 4-over 76 for the final round and 7-over 151 for the tournament.

Community School of Davidson topped Lincoln Charter by 27 shots, posting a combined 64-over 640 total. Carter Cook and Christian Jarrell led the way for the Spartans, each posting 10-over 154’s for the tournament and finishing tied for fifth individually. Alex Williams contributed a two-day 18-over 162 to the Spartan cause with Cole Vahey counting at 26-over and 170. Second place Lincoln Charter’s top finisher was William Crook who finished third overall with an 8-over 152 after holding the overnight lead after day one. 

 

2A Men’s Golf Championship: Midway’s Logan Patrick leads to a sweep of team and individual titles

WHISPERING PINES, NC – The NCHSAA 2A Men’s Golf championship finished at the Country Club of Whispering Pines. The individual championship went to Midway’s Logan Patrick who claimed the school’s first individual Men’s Golf Championship. His heroics led Midway to the first team championship in Men’s Golf in school history.

Patrick shot a 1-under 71 on day one, following that up with a 1-over 73 on day two to finish at even-par for the tournament 144. Patrick started off the round with four pars before hitting some trouble on the fifth hole. Patrick bogeyed the fifth, doubled the sixth and bogeyed the seventh before righting the ship with a par on the par-3 eighth. He had one more bogey on the par-5 eleventh before a furious stretch run with four birdies in the final six holes.

Patrick was six shots clear of second place finisher Zack Byers from Shelby who finished the tournament at 6-over 150. Quinton Metz from Wilkes Central was in third after a final round 1-over 73 landed him at 9-over 153 for the tournament.

Midway cruised to the team championship, beating Lake Norman Charter by 28 shots in the final team count. Trey Pope was a key contributor to the championship for Midway, posting a 14-over 158 for the tournament including a 3-over final round. Andrew Eldridge and Jordan Sullivan finished out the scoring for Midway with 24-over and 25-over scores respectively.

 

3A Men’s Golf Championship: Charlotte Catholic rolls past Clayton for team title, West Carteret’s Hall the only player in red figures for a title

SOUTHERN PINES, NC – The NCHSAA 3A Men’s Golf State Championships wrapped up at Longleaf Golf and Family Club. Charlotte Catholic claimed the school’s third NCHSAA Men’s Golf Team State Championship and their first since winning a 2A State Championship in 2004 at Keith Hills. West Carteret’s Ethan Hall was dominant on day two, posting a 4-under 68, the lowest round of the tournament, on his way to the 3A Individual Title.

Hall outpaced Kings Mountain’s Alex Goff who finished the tournament with a 2-over 146 and even-par final round. Hall only had two bogeys on the round, the par-4 7th and the par-4 15th. He started the round steady, with pars on the first four holes, but then got on a roll with a birdie on the par-5 6th. He birdied back-to-back on the par-5 8thand par-4 9th. He followed that up with another pair of birdies on a pair of par-4’s on the 12thand 13thholes before closing out the round with a birdie on the par-4 18th. He is the first individual golfer from West Carteret to take the Men’s Golf Individual State Championship.

The Cougars carried a nine-shot lead over Clayton into day two of the tournament after posting a 17-over 305 on day one. Cougar golfers steadily built on that lead throughout the final round, with Drew Hackett leading the way with his 2-over 74 on the final day. He finished fourth for the tournament at 6-over 150. Jack Hart carded a 3-over 75 on the final day with Jack Heath adding a 6-over 81 to help push the team to their 34-over 610 total.

Clayton finished second as the Comets posted a combined score of 53-over 629. Tyler Dechellis was the day two leader for Clayton, firing a 4-over 76. Matthew Hayes added a 6-over 78 while Alex Casatelli posted 7-over 79 for the Comets. Clayton had to hold off a hard charge by Mt. Tabor who finished just four shots back of the Comets at 57-over 633. Bennett Wooten was the top performer for Mt. Tabor during the tournament carding a 3-over 75 on the final day to post 8-over 152 for the full event.

4A Men’s Golf Championship: Beechler wins playoff to take second straight championship, Broughton grabs 12th team title

PINEHURST, NC – The NCHSAA 4A Men’s Golf Championships certainly didn’t lack for excitement on day two of the championship at Pinehurst No. 6. Pinecrest’s A.J. Beechler won his second straight 4A Individual State Championship shooting 2-under par on the final day of the tournament to force a playoff with Broughton’s Peter Fountain who shot 1-under 71 on the final day. Fountain and Beechler settled their stalemate on the par-4 18th hole, the first hole of the playoff. Beechler carded a four on the playoff hole with Fountain posting a 5, giving Beechler his second straight NCHSAA 4A Men’s Golf Individual Championship.

Beechler came into the final day of the tournament trailing Ardrey Kell’s Cameron Whitney by five shots after Whitney’s 2-under, 70, on day one. Beechler was tied for tenth place as he entered play. He got his round going with a birdie on the par-5 second hole. He added birdies on the par-5 sixth and par-4 ninth. Miraculously, he carded an eagle on the 18th hole, the par-4, 436-yard hole where Beechler got home in two to post a tournament total of 1-over 145. 

Fountain started the day four shots back of Whitney, tied for seventh with a first round 2-over 74. Fountain carded five birdies on day two of the event, birdieing the par-5 second, then back-to-back birdies on the ninth and tenth hole as he made the turn. He added another pair of birdies on the par-5 15th hole and the par-3 16th. His five birdies and four bogeys combined for a 1-under 71 pushing his two-day total to 1-over 145. 

Broughton came into the final day of play trailing Ardrey Kell by four shots after Kell posted a day one 11-over 299. With the Caps at 15-over 303 after day one, and Cardinal Gibbons close on their heels at 17-over 305, Broughton rallied past Ardrey Kell on day two. The Caps used Fountain’s 1-under to combine with a 3-over, 75, from Patrick Carlin and a pair of 4-over 76’s from Biggs Hawley and Connor Jones to post a day two 10-over, 298. They finished with a total of 601, three shots in front of Myers Park who finished at 604. 

The win was Broughton’s 12th NCHSAA Men’s Golf Team State Championship. It was their first since claiming the 4A title in 2014 at Carolina Trace. Other titles for the Caps came in 2012, 2004 and two strings of titles one from 1998 through 2002 and the other from 1972 through 1974.

Myers Park was in sixth place after the first day of play, trailing day-one leaders Ardrey Kell by 11 shots. The Mustangs combined for a 6-over, 294, on day two to come in second in the team event. Thomas Eubanks fired a 1-under 71 to lead the way. He finished in third in the individual event at 2-over 146. Rex Brietz went even-par 72 on day two with Pearse Lucas carding a 1-over 73 and Luke Hackworth shooting 6-over 78.
