MOCKSVILLE, NC – Camden County had to hold on late but were able to stave off South Stanly 3-2 in the final game of the 2021 1A Softball State Championship Series. The Bruins victory landed the school their first State Championship in Softball.
Kamryn Nash was named the series’ Most Valuable Player, going 2 for the 3 in the final game of the series and plating one of the Bruins three runs. The Bruins led 2-0 in the bottom on the fifth when Nash led off the inning with a bunt single. She came around to score on a single by Carlyn Tanis to put Camden up 3-0. In the series Nash slashed a 6 for 9 line at the plate, scoring four runs for the Bruins out of the leadoff spot in the order.
That run proved to be vital when South Stanly strung together a pair of two-out singles by Sadie Lee and Holly Barrier and both runs scored on an error in the Bruin outfield in the top of the sixth. Other than three singles and an error in the two-run sixth, the Bulls were not able to mount much of a challenge against Morgen Brewton who twirled a complete game allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, scattering seven hits and striking out four without a walk.
South Stanly finished the season 16-4. The Bulls were 8-0 in the Yadkin Valley 1A where they claimed the league championship. South Stanly appeared in the State Softball Series for the second time in their fast-pitch program history, winning the Western Regional Championship for the second time in program history. They made their first State Series appearance since 2012.
Camden County wrapped up the season 15-1. The Bruins were a perfect 6-0 in the Albemarle 1A, winning the league championship. The Bruins won the Eastern Regional Championship for the third time in program history, returning to the State Championship Series for the second year in a row.
