CHAPEL HILL— Cassie Tanton from McMichael High School and Alex Fernandez from Green Level High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week award. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from coaches, media, and school administrators.
Tanton, a Senior on the McMichael Volleyball team had an impressive performance to lead the Phoenix to a win over conference rival, Person High School. Cassie recorded 35 kills and 14 digs as McMichael won the match 3-1. Last week, she also recorded her 1,200th career kill as McMichael moved to 6-0 on the season.
Fernandez, a Sophomore on the Green Level Cross Country team, became the first male runner in school history to win a cross country race finishing first with a time of 16:16.25 in a dual meet vs. Cary on Tuesday. He followed up this performance with a second consecutive first-place finish on Friday with a time of 16:32.05 against Green Hope.
