4A Women’s Golf Championship | Rudisill fires five-under round to put Myers Park atop the leaderboard overnight
PINEHURST, NC – On a picturesque day in the Home of Golf, Pinehurst No. 6 proved to be little trouble for Myers Park’s Elizabeth Rudisill. She carded a 5-under, 67 on her way to a four shot lead in the individual tournament and lifting her team to a four-shot advantage over second-place Pinecrest in the team competition.
Rudisill’s 67 made her just the fifth player in the history of the NCHSAA Women’s Golf State Tournament to card a 67 or better in a single round. She joined Reagan’s Morgan Ketchum and Cardinal Gibbons’ Ellie Hildreth as one of three players to fire a 67 or lower in a single round at the State Championship in the last two years.
Rudisill started on the back nine of the famed Pinehurst No. 6 layout and rolled to a 3-under opening nine before tacking on another birdie on the par 5 second hole to get to 4-under. She did give one shot back on the par 4 fourth, carding her lone bogey of the day before rebounding with a pair of birdies to close out her round on the eighth and ninth holes.
Myers Park sits atop the team competition by just four shots, combining for a 17-over round. The Mustangs got a 5-over round from Ellen Pritchard who sits in a three-way tie for 10th. Myers Park also counted Madison Park’s 17-over round that put her in a tie for 48th overall in their top three scores of the day. The Mustangs lead Pinecrest by just four strokes halfway through the tournament as the Patriots counted a trio of outstanding scores including a pair of 6-over 78’s from Camilah Porras and Kitson O’Neal which matched with Julia Herzberg’s 9-over to put the Pinecrest ladies at 21-over through the opening round.
The team competition is tight with Marvin Ridge and Jordan still lurking. The Mavericks are just six shots off the pace set by Myers Park while the Falcons from Jordan have 11 strokes to make up on day two to contend for a State Championship. Marvin Ridge’s Alicia Fang was the lone other player to post a red number on day one, carding a 1-under 71 with a two-shot advantage on Jordan’s Emerson B. Dever for second place in the individual competition.
3A Women’s Golf Championship | Eastern Alamance’s Mathews looking for third straight title during an intense team competition led by defending champions from Fike
SOUTHERN PINES, NC – Eastern Alamance’s Emily Mathews leads by one shot over Hibriten’s Trinity White and Jacksonville’s Sanaa Carter after day one as Mathews looks to collect her third straight 3A State Championship. Mathews finished her opening round at 1-over 73, racing off to an opening 3-under back nine to begin her day, before struggling on a the challenging front nine at Longleaf.
Mathews front nine started off with her first bogey of the day, followed by a par on the par 4 second hole. She then slipped back further with another bogey on the challenging par 3 third and a triple bogey on the fourth hole to drop her to 2-over for the round. She got back to even par with a pair of back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes before carding her final bogey of the round on the par 5 eighth to wrap up her around at 1-over 73.
Mathews is being pushed by Hibriten’s White and Jacksonville’s Carter who each fired 2-over 74’s in the opening round. White played a steady round carding a birdie on each nine to pair with two bogeys on each side. Carter, a sophomore, had a little bit more eventful round than White on her way to 2-over, going out on the back nine with a 37 that saw her mark three bogeys and three birdies in her first nine holes. She came home with a pair of bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes to slide back into a tie for second.
The team competition is truly up for grabs with Fike leading a group of five teams by four shots or less. The Golden Demons are the defending 3A State Champions and counted a 4-over 76 from Breannon Council to hold a three-shot advantage on Hibriten, East Lincoln and South Central going into the final round as all three of those schools carded 56-over combined by their best three scorers. South Point sits just one shot behind those three teams at 57-over in fifth place.

JACKSON SPRINGS, NC – The Red Devils from Newton-Conover are sitting on a comfortable 13-stroke lead heading into the final 18-holes of the tournament tomorrow. The 13 shots is the largest lead of any team this year heading into the second and final round of the State Championship competition. Foxfire’s Red Course saw the Red Devils post a combined 46-over on day one, led by Celeste Little who carded an 8-over 80 to put her in third after the opening round of the individual competition.
Newton-Conover also saw solid rounds from Sondra Uon and Hailey Hicks who reported rounds of 15-over and 23-over respectively. Pine Lake Prep is still in the hunt for the team title as Caroline Johnson led the Pride with a 4-over 76. Johnson is in second place four shots back of the overnight leader Malerie Lague from Christ the King who carded an even-par 72 on the day.
Lague’s round was an adventurous one, only marking six pars on her way to the even-par round. However, she did record six birdies in her round, including a stretch of four straight from the fourteenth through the seventeenth holes.
