2023 Women’s Golf Championships

NCHSAA Crowns Women’s Golf State Champions

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Women’s Golf Championships concluded on Tuesday at three different sites across the state. Recaps from each of the championships are available below.

4A Championship

At Pinehurst No. 6. (Par 70/5,384 yards), Northwest Guilford junior Leah Edwards knocked off the defending champ Elizabeth Rudisill from Myers Park in a playoff with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

Rudisill entered the second round tied for the lead on the individual leaderboard with Emerson Dever from Jordan, but Rudisill fired a two-over 72 in round two and Dever came in with a 73. Edwards caught up with an even-par 70 after a 72 in round one to finish the 36-hole event tied at the top.
 
The par-4 18th was the setting for the winner-take-all playoff, and Edwards’ fourth birdie of the day sealed the win. Edwards is the first women’s golfer from Northwest Guilford to win the NCHSAA Women’s Golf Individual Championship. 
 
Dever ended up third while Marvin Ridge sophomore Xinyan Li finished fourth. 
 
Northwest Guilford ended up second on the team leaderboard, ten strokes behind Pinecrest, which successfully defended its 2022 title. The win makes six for the Patriots.
 
Marvin Ridge finished in third on the team leaderboard and Jordan and Myers Park rounded out the top-five.

The Association has partnered with the North Carolina Farm Bureau to award a pair of Sportsmanship Awards at each championship event, recognizing players who have demonstrated the ideals of outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the 2023 season. The winners of the 4A Women’s Golf NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards are B B Rujiranran from Pinecrest and Brooke Tyler from Northwest Guilford. 

3A Championship

South Brunswick’s Jillian Fatkin came home with an even-par 36 on the back nine at the Red Course at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club (Par 72/5,577 yards) to win the NCHSAA individual championship by two strokes over a three-way tie for second.

Fatkin is the first Cougar to claim a women’s golf individual title. 
 
South Central senior Haley Paramore, Jacksonville junior Sanaa Carter and Hibriten’s Trinity White tied for second as they all posted 11-over, 155. Fike senior Bree Council and South Central freshman Mary McCarlie tied for fifth. 
 
South Central captured the team title by 28 strokes over Hibriten for the first NCHSAA Women’s Golf State Championship in school history. Southern Alamance edged defending champion Fike by one stroke for third place. Lake Norman Charter was one shot behind Fike to round out the top five.

The winners of the 3A Women’s Golf NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards are Trinity White from Hibriten and Peyton Nichols from South Central. 

1A/2A Championship

At Stonebridge Golf Club (Par 72/5,248 yards), Pine Lake Prep earned its first NCHSAA Women’s Golf Team Championship by finishing 16 shots ahead of Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy.

Pine Lake Prep was powered by a second-place finish from freshman Paisley Freda, who carded a 77, the second-best round of the day on Tuesday.
 
The best round of day two, and day one for that matter, came from Malerie Lague, a junior from Christ the King and the newest 1A/2A NCHSAA Women’s Golf State Champion. Lague fired a 72-75 to win the event by nine strokes. She is the first women’s golfer from Christ the King to claim an individual title. 
 
East Duplin senior Beaty Lanier fished in third and Bradford Prep’s Emily Rosenchein took fourth. Newton-Conover’s Celeste Little and West Lincoln’s Melony Hoffman finished tied for fifth.
