Uwharrie Charter Goes Back-to-Back as 1A Champs

Game 1 – Uwharrie Charter 2, Northside – Pinetown 1 (8 Innings)

HOLLY SPRINGS – The defending champion Uwharrie Charter Eagles walked off on the Northside – Pinetown Panthers 2-1 in eight innings on Friday Night at Ting Stadium to take a 1-0 lead in the 1A Championship Series.

The Panthers took the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI single from Ashton Willard but the Eagles tied things up in the bottom of the seventh. Carter Brown hit a lead-off single in the seventh and came around to score when Landon Zephir singled later in the inning. 

In the extra frame, Troy Carver drew a lead-off walk and, after a single from Caleb Stickle, Brown came up with his third hit of the game to score Carver and seal the win. 

For the Panthers, James Sawyer struckout 15 batters in the complete game-loss while Jake Hunter had 11 strikeouts of his own as he picked up the win.

The 2024 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners for the 1A Baseball Championships were Griffin Johnson from Northside – Pinetown and Caleb Stickle from Uwharrie Charter.

Game 2 – Uwharrie Charter 6, Northside – Pinetown 1

HOLLY SPRINGS – The Uwharrie Charter Eagles won their second consecutive, and third overall, NCHSAA 1A Baseball Championship as they beat Northside – Pinetown 6-1 in Game 2 to sweep the series at Ting Stadium.

The Eagles ended the season 28-6 and are now 6-0 in the NCHSAA Championship Series as they have earned sweeps in all three of their appearances (2019, 2023 and 2024).

Saturday’s contest turned on a three-run home run from Trey Kennedy that gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead. The Eagles built on the lead with the help of some errors and an RBI single from Grat Dalton in the fifth. 

Jake Hunter was named MVP for his 11-strikeout performance in Game 1. 

The Panthers finished the year 22-8 and made their return to the Finals for the first time in 30 years.

Greene Central wins sixth NCHSAA Baseball Title

Game 1 – Greene Central 2, Burns 0

BOX SCORE

DURHAM – The Greene Central Rams picked up a 2-0 win against the Burns Bulldogs in the first game of the 2A Championship Series on Friday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

The Rams took the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Elijah Monroe grounded into a fielder’s  choice that led to an error allowing Noah Uzzell to score the game’s opening run. In the top of the seventh, the Rams added another as Braden Burress hit a hard ground ball that led to Brady Anderson touching home. 

Burress ended up 2-for-4 on the day and picked up the save as he worked the seventh inning and recorded a strikeout. Austin Hardy earned the win for his six innings of work where he gave up five hits and five walks and had seven strikeouts. 

For the Bulldogs, Colby Putnam went 3-for-4 at the plate and threw a complete game in a hard-luck loss. He gave up just two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out 10 batters.

Game 2 – Greene Central 8, Burns 5

BURLINGTON – The Greene Central Rams topped the Burns Bulldogs 8-5 in the second game of the 2A Championship Series to earn the sweep and the program’s sixth state title at Burlington Athletic Stadium on Saturday.

The Rams posted three runs in the first, thanks to a three-run home run from Riley Radford, and three more runs in the second to quickly take a 6-0. In the second Will Radford reached on an error that allowed two runs to score and then Riley Radford singled in the next at-bat to push another across. 

The defending champion Bulldogs attempted to rally in the top of the seventh as Hagan Hoyle hit an RBI fielder’s choice and Ethan Guy hit a single that allowed Camden Mackall and Hoyle to score. That cut the lead down to just three but a fly out to center in the next at-bat ended the game and the series.

Braden Burress threw a complete game for the Rams, allowing five runs (three earned) on 11 hits while striking out two. He also scored two runs. He went 2-for-4 in Game 1 and earned the save. He was named Most Valuable Player of the series. 

The Bulldogs finished the year 31-3 while the Rams went 29-1 in 2024. This season marked the ninth time Greene Central has played for an NCHSAA Baseball Championship.

East Rowan sweeps South Central for 3A Crown

Game 1 – East Rowan 3, South Central 2 (9 Innings)

HOLLY SPRINGS – The East Rowan Mustangs took the first game of the 3A Championship Series 3-2 with a walk-off walk in the ninth inning against the South Central Falcons at Ting Stadium on Friday afternoon. 

The Mustangs took the early lead thanks to RBIs from Krystopher Hernandez and Mason Phelps in the bottom of the second. The Falcons tied things back up at 2-2 in the fourth with the help of an RBI double from Brody Brannan.

The score remained tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the ninth inning. After a double from Braden Shive and an intentional walk to Cobb Hightower loaded the bases, Harrison Ailshie drew a walk on five pitches to seal the win.

The 2024 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners for the 3A Baseball Championships were Josh Britt from South Central and Joe Burleyson from East Rowan.

Game 2 – East Rowan 11, South Central 3

HOLLY SPRINGS – The East Rowan Mustangs defeated South Central 11-3 in Game 2 of the NCHSAA 3A Championship Series on Saturday Afternoon at Ting Stadium to earn the sweep and the third State Championship in program history.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead with the help of two RBIs from Nate Hayworth. The Falcons pulled to within a run but East Rowan pulled away in the fourth inning, adding four more runs. 

Harrison Ailshie added a three-run home run in the sixth to put a bow on the win. He went 3-for-4 on the day with four RBIs. Ailshie also drew the walk-off walk in game one and was named Most Valuable Player for the Series.

The Mustangs finished the season 34-2 while the Falcons ended 2024 24-6. This weekend marked East Rowan’s fourth appearance in the Championship Series, having won in 1995, 2010 and 2024 and finishing runner up in 2008. South Central made its Championship Series debut this season.

T.C. Roberson Rams repeat as NCHSAA 4A Champions

Game 1 – T.C. Roberson 3, Ashley 0

BOX SCORE

BURLINGTON – The defending champion T.C. Roberson Rams took the first step towards a repeat with a 3-0 win against the Ashley Screaming Eagles in the first game of the 4A Championship Series on Friday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

The Rams took the lead in the bottom of the first inning as Caden Davidson doubled home Zeb Swangim, Micah Simpson hit an RBI sac fly and J.T. Smith singled home Carson Heath to take the early 3-0 lead. That offensive burst was the only one of the game, as neither team scored again the rest of the way.

Simpson earned the win on the mound as he went 6.1 scoreless innings and gave up six hits while striking out three batters and allowing just one walk. C.J. Wallace came on with one out and one on in the top of the seventh and, two pitches later, earned the save after a game-ending double play.

For the game, Smith went 2-for-3 for the Rams and Cane Mehling went 2-for-3 for the Eagles.

The 2024 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners for the 4A Baseball Championships were Jayce Atanasoff from Ashley and Clinton Miller from T.C. Roberson.

Game 2 – T.C. Roberson 8, Ashley 1

BOX SCORE

BURLINGTON – The T.C. Roberson Rams took Game 2 from the Ashley Screaming Eagles 8-1 to sweep the NCHSAA 4A Championship Series and defend their 2023 title. It is the sixth NCHSAA Baseball Championship for the Rams.

T.C. Roberson got off to a hot start as the Rams scored three runs in both the first and second innings to take a 6-0 lead. The Eagles picked up  on in the bottom of the second but the Rams added two more in the third and both teams were scoreless the rest of the way. 

Caden Davidson went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Rams and both Jake Parham and Micah Simpson added two hits and two RBIs. Chappy Smith also had a run and two hits in the game.

Davidson was named Most Valuable Player for the series. 

For Ashley, Dylan Welch scored the only run and Tanner Berry had the team’s lone hit. 

C.J. Wallace pitched six scoreless relief innings for the Rams and allowed just the one hit while striking out four batters.

The Rams finished the year 28-4 and won their last 14 games. This year marked the Rams’ eighth appearance in the finals. The Eagles ended the season 26-6 and will take their second NCHSAA Runner-Up trophy back to Wilmington.
