CARY – The 2024 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A Swimming and Diving Champions were crowned on Thursday night at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
Raleigh Charter, Pine Lake Prep Claim 1A/2A Championships
The Women’s Team from Pine Lake Prep won its third NCHSAA Swimming and Diving Championship and first since 2017. The Pride was powered by wins in the 200-yard Medley Relay and the 200-yard Freestyle Relay. Raleigh Charter came in second place with 209 points, 33 points behind the Pride.
Burns’ junior Alexandra Tysinger was named Most Outstanding Swimmer in the competition as she won the 50 Free and the 100 Free – just .19 off the pace of the 1A/2A State Record.
In the Men’s competition, Raleigh Charter won its second title after winning its first in 2018. The Phoenix racked up 294 points in the event, more than 100 points clear of the North Carolina School of Science and Math (Durham) in second place. Pine Lake Prep took first place in the 200-yard Medley Relay and the 400-yard Relay. Phoenix senior Owen VonWeihe won both the 200 IM and the 500 Free and Freshman Leon Zhang won the 200 Free.
West Davidson’s Luke Nebrich set a new 1A/2A State Record in the 50 Free as he posted a 20.36. He also won the 100 Butterfly and was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer in the event.
In the Diving Competition on Thursday at the Pullen Aquatic Center in Raleigh, Garrett Urash from Shelby took first place in the men’s competition, and Tayler Curlee, a senior from Community School of Davidson, won the women’s competition.
The NCHSAA is committed to promoting good sportsmanship and has partnered with the NC Farm Bureau to recognize two athletes from each State Championship event with the NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards. The Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2024 Swimming and Diving Championships were Teagan Laursen from NCSSM (Durham), Kyle Su from Raleigh Charter, Kate Ragsdale from Raleigh Charter, and Lily Storie from Pine Lake Prep.

Lake Norman Charter, Carrboro Claim 3A Swimming and Diving Titles
In the women’s competition, Lake Norman Charter racked up 300 team points to roll to their first NCHSAA Championship in Women’s Swimming and Diving. Orange finished in second with 187 points and Carrboro, which had won five straight NCHSAA titles, finished in third with 174 points.
On the men’s side, Carrboro extended its streak to four NCHSAA State Championships after winning the 1A/2A title in 2021 and the 2022, 2023, and 2024 in 3A. The Jaguars tallied 237 points, 39 points ahead of Lake Norman Charter in second place. Durham School of the Arts finished third.
There were four new records set in the event as Lake Norman Charter’s Hayden Schroeder broke his own 3A record score of 581.7 in the 1-meter dive. The diving portion of the competition took place on Wednesday at the Pullen Aquatic Center in Raleigh.
Orange’s Katie Belle Sikes posted a time of 48.76 in the 100-yard freestyle to set a new state record. She held the 3A record after last year’s performance but now holds the state record. She was named Most Outstanding Swimmer in the event as she won the 50-free and 100-free and was on the winning relay team in the 200-yard free and 200-yard medley. This is Sikes’ second consecutive Most Outstanding Swimmer award at the State Championships.
Durham School of the Art’s senior Lucca Battaglini set two new state records with a time of 42.60 in the 100-yard freestyle and 47.30 in the 100-yard backstroke. He now holds four state records as he set the mark last year in the 50-free and the 100 butterfly. He was named Most Outstanding Swimmer for the third year in a row.

Myers Park, Marvin Ridge claim 4A Swimming and Diving Titles
The Myers Park women’s team won their third consecutive title, and the men’s team won the program’s fourth championship but first as a 4A school.
In the women’s competition, Myers Park tallied 259 points, 20 points clear of Green Hope in second place. Marvin Ridge finished in third.
The Mustangs took first and second in the 200-yard IM as Avery Klamfoth touched the wall in 1:57.61, and Sofia Plaza finished in 1:59.04. That duo also finished second and third in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Myers Park added second-place finishes in the 200 and 400 Yard Freestyle Relays.
The Championship is the fourth in program history for the Mustangs with the first coming in 1976.
Green Hope was bolstered by junior Mere Whelehan as she won the 200 and 400 Freestyle races and swam the second leg on the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team that also took first place. Whelehan was named Most Outstanding Swimmer for her performance.
In the men’s competition, Marvin Ridge racked up 255 points, 100 points clear of Cardinal Gibbons in second place.
The Mavericks’ 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Charles Heisig, Troy Keen, Gavin McCarter, and Michael Rice set a new State Record with a time of 1:23.25. In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, Jordan Willis replaced McCarter, and they also set a new State Record in that event, beating the old record by more than a second, a record they set in the prelims earlier in the day.
Heisig also won the 200-yard IM, and Willis finished second in the 100 Backstroke.
Ashley senior Sean Setzer won the Most Outstanding Swimmer Award as he won the 50 Free with a new 4A State Record time of 19.75 and did the same in the 100 Free with a time of 43.99.
