Raleigh, NC – On Saturday, the 2024 North Carolina High School Athletic Association Volleyball State Champions were crowned at Reynolds Coliseum on the NCSU campus.

Polk County sweeps Perquimans to defend 2023 title

RALEIGH – The Polk County Wolverines took down the Eastern Regional Champion Perquimans Pirates 25-15, 27-25, 25-12 on Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum to secure the program’s second straight NCHSAA championship. 
 
After controlling the first set, the Wolverines faced a stiffer challenge in the second set but ultimately held the Pirates at bay, paving the way for another dominating performance in the final set. 
 
Senior Morgan Yoder led the way for the Wolverines as she had a game-high 17 kills, an ace, nine digs and five blocks. She was named Most Valuable Player for her performance. Sophia Overholt added 13 kills and 13 digs and Charley Dusenbury tallied 38 assists. 
 
For the Pirates, Kaydee Hunter had a team-high 16 kills and added five digs. Morgan Byrum had a solid game as well as she had five kills and 15 digs. Madelyn Stallings recorded 24 assists.
 
The Pirates finished the season 26-2 and are now 0-4 in championship matches. The Wolverines wrapped up the 2024 campaign 22-3 in spite of the fact that they went 19 days without a game due to Hurricane Helene. Polk County won the final 13 games that it played this year and did not drop a single set in the playoffs.

The Association has partnered with the North Carolina Farm Bureau to award a pair of Sportsmanship Awards at each championship event, recognizing players who have demonstrated the ideals of outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the 2024 season. The winners of the 1A Volleyball NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards were Catherine Howell from Perquimans and Kylie Lewis from Polk County.

McMichael holds off Seaforth in five sets for 2A title

RALIEGH – The McMichael Phoenix outlasted a strong effort from the Seaforth Hawks at Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of N.C. State University on Saturday afternoon to claim the program’s second state championship.
 
The Seaforth Hawks jumped out to an early lead as they took the first set 25-17 but McMichael rallied back and took a 2-1 lead after winning the second set 25-22 and the third set 25-18. 
 
Seaforth forced the decisive game five with a 25-22 win in the fourth set, but the Phoenix scored the final two points of the fifth set to break the 13-13 tie and seal the win. 
 
McMichael was led on the day by senior Jenna Rosenbaum, as she had 20 kills, two aces, six digs, and a block. She was named MVP for her efforts in the match. Fellow senior Avery Chandler added ten kills, and junior Zoey Bradford racked up 32 assists.
 
For the Hawks, sophomore Ally Forbes had a game-high 24 kills, seven aces, and six digs. Maris Huneycutt had 26 assists, Josie Valgus added 20, and Mia Kellam had a game-high 25 digs. 

Seaforth finished the season 25-5, while McMichael ended the year 30-2 and won their final 16 contests. The Phoenix are now 2-1 all-time in championship matches, while Seaforth is 0-1.

West Henderson knocks off J.H. Rose for sixth title in program history

RALEIGH – After dropping the first set, the West Henderson Falcons rallied to win the next three and take home the program’s first NCHSAA title since 2008 with a 3-1 win over J.H. Rose on Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum. 
 
The Falcons are now 6-6 all time in State Championship matches. 
 
West Henderson was led on the day by senior Emma Bryson, who had 15 kills, 11 digs, four blocks and an ace. She was named the Most Valuable Player for her performance. Both Isabella Baylor and Marley Orr added 11 kills for the Falcons. Holland Corbin tallied a game-high 39 assists and Allyson Garcia led the way with 27 digs.
 
For the Rampants, Clara Evans had 27 kills and 17 digs. Kate Wallen and Mia Kendrick added nine and eight kills, respectively. Carolina Bayes racked up 32 assists and added 14 digs and Ann Duke added 15 digs. 

J.H. Rose finished the season 23-5 and is now 3-3 all time in championship matches. West Henderson ended 2024 26-2 and won their final 12 matches, stretching back to before a 15-day enforced break thanks to Hurricane Helene.

Cardinal Gibbons slides past Marvin Ridge 3-1

RALEIGH – The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders capped an undefeated season on Saturday night in Reynolds Coliseum with a hard-fought 3-1 win against Marvin Ridge in the 4A Championship match.
 
The Crusaders came out hot in the first set and rolled to a 25-11 win in the opener, but Marvin Ridge responded in the second set and tied things up with a 25-21 win. Cardinal Gibbons narrowly edged the Mavericks 26-24 in each of the next two sets to seal the win. 
 
The second set on Saturday was just the third dropped set all season for the Crusaders. 
 
Cardinal Gibbons was led by Mary Grace Gonyeau’s 20 kills and she added nine digs. Genevieve Harris had 55 assists, five kills, and ten digs in the game and was named the Most Valuable Player. Hailey Mueller added 12 kills and 15 digs and Charlotte Bell and Ameila Bell added 10 and 11 kills, respectively.
 
For the Mavericks, Natalie Unkrich had a team-high 16 kills, and Ashley Murray added 13. Beckett Hammers had 26 digs, and Jillian Young racked up 27 assists.
 
Gibbons was the only Eastern Regional Champion to win on Saturday and finished the season 22-0, earning sweeps in 19 of those contests. The Crusaders are now 12-1 in NCHSAA championship matches but this was their first title since 2020.
 
Marvin Ridge finished the season 34-4, and Saturday marked their first loss – and first dropped set – since August 27. The Mavericks are now 1-1 in NCHSAA championship matches, having won the title in 2018.
