2025 Dual Team Wrestling Championships

The NCHSAA is committed to promoting good sportsmanship and has partnered with the NC Farm Bureau to recognize two athletes from each State Championship event with the NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards. Uwharrie Charter three-peats as 1A Champion

GREENSBORO – The Uwharrie Charter Eagles picked up their fourth NCHSAA 1A Dual Team Wrestling Championship – and third in three years – as they defeated Mount Airy  48-15 on Saturday at the Novant Health Fieldhouse. 

The Eagles won the first five bouts and the last five bouts as they controlled the match. Aiden Foster (157 pounds), Caleb Saldana (126), Brennan Worrell (132), and Rick Riccardella (138) all recorded pins for the Eagles. In the 175-pound bout, Caden Bond earned an 11-5 decision over Mount Airy’s John Martin and was named the Most Valuable Player for his performance. 

Mount Airy’s Andrew Meadows (190) earned a crucial pin to put the Granite Bears on the board and keep their title hopes alive. Aaron Ruiz-Angel earned a disqualification win at 285 pounds, and Angel Olalde won a 7-3 decision at 106 to make the score 24-15. But the Eagles closed out the match with five straight wins, including three pins.

The Eagles are now 4-2 all-time in the Championship match, having won in 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Their two runner-up finishes came in 2020 and 2022, making Saturday their sixth consecutive appearance in the Championship Match.

The winners of the 1A Wrestling NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards were Joseph Jones from Mount Airy and Caden Thorne from Uwharrie Charter.

R-S Central wins thriller in 2A Championship

Greensboro – The Rutherfordton – Spindale Central Hilltoppers edged past the Seaforth Hawks 34-32 on Saturday at the Novant Health Fieldhouse to win the program’s first-ever NCHSAA Dual Team Wrestling Championship.

The match came down to the final bout as Seaforth held a 32-31 lead going into the 138-pound matchup. R-S Central’s Cayden Laws earned a takedown with just over a minute to go in the third period to take the 8-7 lead, and he maintained control to seal the State Championship. Laws was named the Most Valuable Player for his efforts. 

The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early lead in the match, winning the first four bouts and taking a 19-0 lead, but the Hawks battled back, winning five of the next six to tighten up the score. Judge Lloyd (175 pounds), Gabe Rogers (120), and Layne Armstrong (132) all earned pins for the Eastern Regional Champions.

Cameron Crawford (144), Caleb Cox (165), Connor Olivares (285), and Sam Gosnell (126) all picked up pinfall wins for the Hilltoppers. 

The Hilltoppers were making their Championship Match debut on Saturday, while the Hawks were making their second appearance after their debut last season.

Union Pines breaks through for first title

GREENSBORO – The fourth time was the charm for the Union Pines Vikings at the NCHSAA Dual Team Wrestling State Championship Match on Saturday at the Novant Health Fieldhouse.

Union Pines made its fourth consecutive appearance in the Dual Team Championship match and earned its first championship with a 47-17 win against the Pisgah Bears. 

The Vikings won the first seven bouts of the Championship Match, taking a commanding 31-0 lead, but the Western Regional Champions took three of the next four matches, including two pins from Christian Gibson at 113 pounds and Kane Bryson at 120 pounds. 

Union Pines closed out the victory as Keaton Crawford and Joseph Lloyd earned tech fall wins, and Jose Salinas earned a 7-1 decision in the final three bouts. 

Union Pines’ Brock Sullivan, at 215 pounds, earned a hard-fought 4-2 decision against Landon Pope and was named the Most Valuable Player for the Championship.

Cardinal Gibbons wins first Dual Team Wrestling Title

Greensboro – The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders earned the program’s first NCHSAA Dual Team Wrestling Championship with a 41-22 win against Hickory Ridge on Saturday at the Novant Health Fieldhouse.

The Crusaders’ Liam Hickey, in the 144-pound weight class, set the tone in the first match with a pin, and Cardinal Gibbons never looked back. Hickey was named the Most Valuable Player for his efforts on the day. 

Beckham Enoch followed Hickey with a technical fall in the next bout. Ryan Thompson picked up a tech fall win as well. Luke Richards (106 pounds) and Alexander Rodriguez (138) added pins for the Crusaders. 

For the Ragin’ Bulls, Colton Campbell (190) and Damien Couture (285) earned pins.

Cardinal Gibbons is now 1-1 in Championship Matches, having made their first appearance in 2020. Hickory Ridge made its Championship Match debut on Saturday.
