Raleigh Charter Sweeps 1A/2A Swimming and Diving Championships

CARY – The Raleigh Charter Phoenix swept the 1A/2A NCHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday night at the Triangle Aquatic Center as both men’s and women’s teams took the top spots. 

The Championship is the seventh title for the women’s program (first since 2018), and third for the men, who also won last year and in 2018. 

In the women’s competition, the Phoenix dominated in the relays as Emily Lee, Christiana Hoang, Dorothy Ellen Grant and Reina Liu won the 200-Yard Medley Relay, and Grant, Allyson Deans, Hoang and Liu won the 400 free relay.

Katie Hu, Sydney Chase, Deans and Derin Sen took second in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay.

Liu also won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke events, setting a new 1A/2A meet record in both.

Woods Charter sophomore Daisy Collins won both the 200- and 500-Freestyle events and shattered the 1A/2A meet records for both in the process. In the 500, she posted a time of 4:45.36 more than 3.5 seconds better than the previous record, and in the 200, she broke the old record by 1.18 seconds. Both previously belonged to Emily Knorr from Salisbury. Collins was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Swimmer.

In the Diving Competition, Community School of Davidson’s Addison Nardone took the top spot and Avery Nardone took third. Thomas Jefferson’s Camryn Clark finished second. 

in the team standings, Pine Lake Prep finished in second place with 232 points and NCSSM-Durham took third with 154. The Phoenix tallied 271.5.

In the men’s competition, the Phoenix again controlled the relays as Kyle Su, Alex Lee, Roger Zhang and Leon Zhang won the 200-Yard Medley Relay and Su, Thomas Healy, Jake Walker and Leon Zhang won the 400-Yard Relay.

Leon Zhang also won the 200 Free and 100 Fly and was Co-Most Outstanding Swimming along with Franklin Academy’s Andrew Cook who won the 50- and 100-Freestyle events.

Raleigh Charter’s Alex Lee won the 500 Free, just ahead of Cherryville’s Steven Wyatt. Wyatt’s second-place finish is the first ever medal for Cherryville in the NCHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

In the Diving Competition, Eno River freshman Evan Myers took first place on Friday night at Pullen Aquatic Center. Shelby’s Jacob Urash finished in second.

NCSSM-Durham was the runner-up in the team competition and Seaforth took third place.

The Association has partnered with the North Carolina Farm Bureau to award a pair of Sportsmanship Awards at each championship event, recognizing players who have demonstrated the ideals of outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the 2024-25 season. The winners of the 1A/2A Swimming and Diving Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards were Katie Hu and Tommy Healy from Raleigh Charter, Sydney Haun from Pine Lake Prep and Skyler Qu from NCSSM Durham.

Lake Norman Charter Dominates 3A Swimming Championships; Western Alamance and DSA Claim Diving Crowns

CARY – The Lake Norman Charter Knights swept the 3A Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday night at the Triangle Aquatic Center, winning both men’s and women’s team titles. While it is the first team title for the men’s program, the women’s program won its first championship last season and successfully defended it. 

In the women’s competition, the Knights racked up points in multiple events but were particularly successful in the relays. Addison Lasarsky, Lily Price, Skye Yampolsky, and Campbelle Cyrus won the 200-yard Medley, and Price, Yampolsky, Campbelle, and Dakota Gayle won the 400-yard Freestyle. 

The Knights also took second in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay as Lasarsky, Gayle, Alana Kolano, and Avery Newsome came in less than 1.5 seconds behind the Central Cabarrus team of Abbey Cronin, Audrey Wolff, Leah Cronin, and Lyla Johns.

Cyrus also tallied a second-place finish in the 100-butterfly, Gayle added a third-place finish in the 100- and 200-free races and Price took third in the 100-back. Kaitlyn Knulsen and Katherin Shapard took second and third in the Diving competition on Thursday evening at the Pullen Aquatic Center in Raleigh. 

Western Alamance junior Michaela Bentley took first place in the diving competition.

Central Cabarrus took second place in the competition with 185 points; Lake Norman Charter tallied 360. Carrboro took third place. 

Concord’s Lily Hermans was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer as she won both the 50- and 100-free races. 

In the men’s competition, the Knights took second in the 400-Free Relay as Alex Stinson, Carter Hall, Jack Rodgers, and Neil Hart finished 2.5 seconds behind Orange’s team of Alexander Andre, Ayden Twiddy, Noah Jones, and Luke Roman. 

Lake Norman Charter also picked up a third-place finish in the 200-Free Relay. Stinson added a third-place finish in the 200-free, and Hart also took third in the 100-back.

Orange, which finished in third place on the team leaderboard, was led by Roman, who won the 200- and 500-free races. He was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer in the event. The Panthers tallied 164 points in the competition, just six points behind Carrboro in second place. 

Croatan came in fourth, and Forestview rounded out the top five.

On Thursday, in the diving competition, Durham School of the Arts sophomore William Clark took first place with a score of 353.9.

Myers Park, Cardinal Gibbons, and Charlotte Catholic take home 4A Swimming & Diving Championships

The Myers Park Mustangs claimed their fourth consecutive NCHSAA 4A Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship on Thursday night at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. In the men’s competition, the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders earned the team title, their first since 2013. 

Myers Park tallied 260 points in the competition to finish just ahead of Green Hope, which scored 254.5. Green Hope also finished as runner-up in 2024. The title is the fifth in program history, as the Mustangs first won in 1976. 

The Mustangs’ Karina Plaza, Mary Drummond, Avery Klamfoth, and Katherin Guenther won the 400-yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 3.23.39. Emma Richardson and Taylor Weaver joined Plaza and Klamfoth in the 200-yard Medley relay and took first place, setting a new State Meet record in the process. 

Richardson, a freshman for Myers Park, added a second-place performance in the 50-free behind Green Hope Sophomore Sloane Whelehan. Whelehan also won the 200-yard Freestyle and swam on the 200-yard Freestyle Relay team that took first place in that event. Whelehan was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer for her performance on the day. 

In the Diving Championships on Wednesday, Charlotte Catholic’s Reagan Leckner took first place with a score of 443.35. East Chapel Hill’s Laila Kwong came in second. 

In the men’s competition, the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders racked up 241 points on the way to their first 4A Men’s NCHSAA Swimming and Diving Championship. Cardinal Gibbons won six consecutive titles from 2008-2013 (2008 and 2009 in 1A/2A and 2010-13 in 3A), but this is the Crusader’s first win since that run. 

The Crusaders’ depth helped power them to the team title. Carter Lange finished third in the 50-yard freestyle, Liam Drake took third place in the 500-yard freestyle, and Jett Dooley, Nick John, Tommy Tuescher, and Jacob Anderson added a third-place finish in the 200-yard Medley Relay.

Enloe took second place on the team leaderboard, and Marvin Ridge finished one point behind the Eagles in third. Enloe seniors Ian Stutts and Alex Townsend finished first and second in the 200-yard IM, and both bested the 4A record that Stutts set last year in the process. Stutts kept the record, posting a 1:46.26 this year, more than a second better than last year’s time but just three hundredths of a second faster than Townsend. 

Marvin Ridge was led by Michael Rice, who took second in the 50-free and first in the 100 free, setting a new 4A record with a time of 43.56 in the finals. He also swam on the 400-yard Freestyle Relay team that took the top spot as well. Rice was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer for his efforts. 

In the Diving Championships on Wednesday at the Pullen Aquatic Center, Charlotte Catholic’s Mason Kramer took the top spot with a score of 455.20. Northern Guilford’s Jacob Pollina, the 2024 Champion, took second place.
