NEW LONDON— A long time coach and athletic administrator will be honored at the school where he enjoyed a great career.
The Stanly County Board of Education has announced that the gymnasium at North Stanly High School will be named in honor of Lonnie Chandler.
Chandler was a teacher and coach at North Stanly for the better part of four decades. He coached the women’s basketball team for 33 years and his teams earned a whopping 556 victories. His teams enjoyed 12 seasons of 20 ore more victories, won 13 conference regular season titles and five conference tournaments. He also served as head football coach for nine years and was athletic director for 25.
Chandler is a member of the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame and the Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame.
The honor comes during the 50th anniversary of North Stanly High School as well as the 100th anniversary of the NCHSAA. The ceremony will take place on Friday prior to the last regular season home game of the year against West Stanly.
