Former Coach, Baseball Star Dies In Gaston County

GASTONIA— Hugh “Buzz” Peeler, a legend in Gaston County baseball who also had an extensive tenure as a high school baseball coach, died recently, according to The Gaston Gazette.

Peeler, who was also a collegiate standout at Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, was the one of the first Cherryville Post 100 American Legion standouts who helped led his team to its first state title and Legion World Series.

Peeler, a graduate of Lincolnton High School, had coaching stints at Bessemer City, Fred T. Foard and the old North Brook High School in Lincoln County as well as at several junior highs.
