Three Tied For Individual 4-A Lead; Ardrey Kell Paces Teams

THREE GOLFERS TIED FOR INDIVIDUAL LEAD IN 4-A,ARDREY KELL TOPS TIGHT TEAM STANDINGS

PINEHURST – Three golfers are tied for the lead after Monday’s opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.

Meghan Symons of Cary Green Hope, Gabby Weiss of Southern Pines Pinecrest and Abbey Hartsell of Alexander Central each had five-over scores of 76 on a cold, blustery and damp day. The course is set at par 71 and a 5,735-yard layout for the championship.

Sarah Bae of Raleigh Athens Drive and New Bern’s Shelby Osiecki are two shots back at 78.

 Defending individual champion Victoria Allred of Pfafftown Reagan had an 82 on the opening day and is tied for 13th.           

Charlotte Ardrey Kell leads the tight team standings with a 248, two shots ahead of second-place Cary Green Hope and four ahead of Southern Pines Pinecrest. Pfafftown Reagan is fourth at 255, seven shots back.

The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 14 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the 10th year that the sport has been classified. It is the second time that three separate championships have been held and the 32nd year for state championship competition in the sport.

The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at  Tuesday morning.
