Salisbury Opens Up Big Lead In 1-A/2-A Women’s Golf

SALISBURY OPENS HUGE LEAD IN 1-A/2-A WOMEN’S GOLF

FOXFIRE VILLAGE— Defending champion Isabella Rusher of Salisbury holds a one-shot lead after Monday’s opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 1-A/2-A women’s golf championships at the West Course at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Foxfire Village.

Rusher, who won the title by a single shot a year ago, was four over par on a chilly, blustery, damp day with very difficult playing conditions. The course is set at par 71 and a 5,765-yard layout for the championship.

Elkin’s Mary Frances Hall is one shot off the pace at 76, with Salisbury’s Grace Yatawara in third at 78, three shots back.

Defending champion Salisbury, which rolled to the 1-A/2-A team championship a year ago by a whopping 33 shots over runner-up Northwood, is in the process of doing it again. Salisbury opened up a 29-shot advantage of second-place Newport Croatan, with Monroe Piedmont in third at 280.

The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 13 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the tenth year that the sport has been classified. It is the second year that three separate championships have been held and the 32nd year for state championship competition in the sport.

The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at Tuesday morning.
