A number of North Carolina High School Athletic Association athletic teams are involved in community service projects or raising money for worthy causes.

Jeremy Byrd, an English teacher at South Johnston High School who also serves as assistant athletic director and junior varsity volleyball coach, reports that South Johnston and Enloe have teamed together on a “Dig Pink” project:

“This fall, the South Johnston High School and Enloe High School volleyball teams partnered together for two separate “Dig Pink” games in order to raise money for breast cancer research.

“The idea was the brainchild of Enloe head coach Lauren Brooks and South Johnston head coach Matthew Adams.  These coaches have been close friends for many years and both know the trials of having a family member fighting breast cancer.  Brooks’ mother is a breast cancer survivor and Adams has two aunts that were recently diagnosed with breast cancer less than a month apart.

“Enloe hosted the first game on September 24 and South Johnston hosted the second game on October 1. Both teams had special jerseys made that incorporated the pink ribbons for breast cancer research and the game was played with a pink ball. Each player and coaches from both teams dedicated their play that night over the public address system in memory or honor of someone affected by breast cancer. Following this was a moment of silence for all people affected by the disease.

“South Johnston High School raised $250 by selling pink ribbon flyers for one dollar each. These flyers were placed on the gym wall during the volleyball game.  This was a great experience for both teams and a great humanitarian effort by the girls.”
