Hoke County Runner Has Tremendous Game

RAEFORD— Detrez Newsome of Hoke County High School earned a performance listing in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association football record book with a great game last weekend.

Newsome rushed for a whopping 402 yards in 20 carries and scored six touchdowns as Hoke raced past Wilmington Ashley 48-30 in the season opener for both teams.

Newsome’s performance is the 23rd that has been reported for NCHSAA record consideration in which a player has rushed for 400 or more yards in a varsity football game. The current state record is held by Akile Jones of Lejeune, who rushed for  490 yards in a 47-30 victory over Dixon in the 2011 season.

Congratulations to Detrez Newsome!
