Each week an athlete in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association is selected for the Performance of the Week Award, Powered by OrthoCarolina. These athletes are nominated by coaches, media, and school administrators for their outstanding performance.
The OrthroCarolina Performer of the Week for week fourteen of NCHSAA competition goes to Cole McCoy of Nantahala High School and Jaida McGrew of Mountain Island Charter.
McCoy a Freshman on the Nantahala basketball team exploded in two games this week against Highlands High School and Blue Ridge Early College. Against Highlands he scored a game high 43 points on 14 for 33 shooting while also dishing out 3 assist and grabbing 5 rebounds. Later that week against Blue Ridge Early College he again scored a game high 54 points.
McGrew a Sophomore on the Mountain Island Charter Indoor Track team had a stellar performance, breaking her school record in the 55-meter dash and earning the overall girls MVP at the 2022 Donna Davis Holiday Invitational. She took home first place in the 55-meter dash, posting a time of 7.25 seconds. This time currently ranks her #1 in the 1A/2A classification and #5 in all NCHSAA classifications for 55-meter dash times ran this indoor season. She
also ran the anchor leg of the 4×200 meter relay team that finished in first place at this meet. She finished a very close second in the 300-meter dash. She posted a time of 43.69, which was .13 off from the first-place finish in this event.
