Weddington Takes NCHSAA 3-A Baseball Crown

NCHSAA 3-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP–GAME TWO
WEDDINGTON TAKES NCHSAA STATE 3-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
ZEBULON — Jeremy Schellhorn drove in three runs and Alex Bostic hit a monster home run to lead Weddington to a 4-2 victory over Pikeville Charles B.Aycock and the state championship on Saturday in the second game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.
The Warriors, in their first NCHSAA baseball championship series, swept the series in two close games.  Bostic got the pitching victory on Friday night as Weddington built up a 5-0 lead and then held off a rally by the Golden Falcons to win the opener 5-3.
Bostic was named the Most Valuable Player of the series.
In the decisive game, Aycock took a 2-0 lead in the second, parlaying a single, a walk, a fielder’s choice, an error, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch into a pair of runs. But Weddington came back in the top of the third to knot it at 2-2 on a two-run single by Schellhorn.
Bostic blasted a home run off the scoreboard to give his team a 3-2 lead in the fifth, and then the Warriors added an insurance run with a two-out RBI-single by Schellhorn in the seventh.
Aycock, just as it had in the Friday game, had lots of scoring opportunities but stranded a whopping 15 runners in the game.
Adam Pate and Cameron Taylor each had two hits for the Golden Falcons. Sean Collins was the winning pitcher, striking out three and walking five, while Bryant Stafford got the loss for the Golden Falcons.
Weddington finished 28-6 overall while Aycock fell to 21-11.
