On this day in history in the NCHSAA, Anna Evans of Lumberton and Drew Williamson of Cummings received the Pat Best Memorial Awards as the NCHSAA Athletes of the Year for the 2002-03 academic year. Williamson was a top player in both football and basketball, throwing for 3,118 yards as a quarterback during his senior year, while Evans was a three-sport star in tennis, basketball and softball and was a starting guard on a team that reached two state championship games.
