Scholarship 5k Honors Wake County Teacher And Coach

CARY— The Coach Daniels Inaugural Memorial Scholarship 5K will be held Saturday, April 28, starting at 9:00 am.This run or walk event will be held at Koka Booth Amphitheater.

All profits from this event will go to the Gene Daniels Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Gene Daniels Memorial Scholarship: will be awarded this school year to a male and female from both Apex High School and Panther Creek High School in memory of “Coach D” who taught and coached in western Wake County for over twenty years.

The recipients should embody the qualities that Gene valued: a strong work ethic, high moral character, a strong sense of community service, and a love of sports.

Gene Daniels, known by many in the Apex community as “Coach D”, had a passion for teaching and coaching in the Wake County Public School System for 24 years. Daniels began his teaching career in Wake County in 1988. He spent 14 years as the physical education teacher at Penny Road Elementary, where he received Teacher of the Year honors in 2002.

In 2004, Coach D moved to Salem Middle School, taking on the responsibilities of athletic director, physical education teacher and girls’ soccer coach. He received the Wake County Schools Employee Excellence Award in 2005.

He was head coach of the women’s junior varsity soccer team at Apex High School for many years and helped assist with the varsity team as well, with 20 years of involvement in the Apex soccer program.
