On this day in history in the NCHSAA, coach Daryl McClure of the Hayesville women’s basketball team won their first of six consecutive 1-A state championships by defeating Hobbton 70-53. Alice Carter earned Most Valuable Player honors for the championship.

March 26, 1994

On this day in history in the NCHSAA, Morganton Freedom guard Danny Johnson fired in a Smith Center high school record 37 points to lead the Patriots to an 87-75 victory over Cary for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s basketball championship. Johnson was a unanimous choice for Most Valuable Player, hitting 12 of 18 shots from the floor.
