2011 Fall Season Wells Fargo Cup Leaders Announced
Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings for fall sports in the Wells Fargo Cup competitions for the 2011-12 academic year.
The Wells Fargo Cup, formerly known as the Wachovia Cup, is sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA. The award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Cup program is in its 33rd year.
Defending champion Cary Green Hope sits atop the 4-A standings with Raleigh Broughton in second place, while defending Cup champion Cardinal Gibbons paces the 3-A group of schools. Salisbury, which won the Cup last year, holds the top position among 2-A schools with Carrboro just behind in second, and the North Carolina School of Science and Math and Hendersonville are one-two in the 1-A classification standings, as they were at the end of the fall season a year ago.
Green Hope, which claimed both the 4-A men’s soccer state title and the women’s cross country crown while also finishing in the top four in volleyball, tallied 195 points to hold a 25-point advantage over Raleigh Broughton. Broughton won the men’s cross country title, finished third in women’s cross country and was the state runner-up in women’s dual team tennis.
Charlotte Myers Park is in third place with 165 points, while Charlotte Ardrey Kell (155) is fourth and Asheville T.C. Roberson (147.5) fifth.
Cardinal Gibbons enjoyed a terrific fall season as the only school scoring playoff points in all seven fall sports, amassing a total of 347.5 points. Crusader teams earned five different state championships, in volleyball, women’s tennis, both women’s and men’s cross country and men’s soccer. Charlotte Catholic has a total of 192. 5 points for second place, paced by runner-up finishes in both women’s tennis and men’s soccer and a trip to the state semifinals in football.
Waxhaw Marvin Ridge is in third with 157.5 points, followed by Northern Guilford (152.5), the state 3-AA football champion, and Chapel Hill (147.5).
Salisbury holds a 10-point edge over Carrboro in the 2-A standings with a total of 207.5 points. Salisbury’s top fall performances included three first-place finishes, in women’s tennis, men’s soccer and women’s golf. Carrboro took the women’s 2-A cross country crown while the men’s cross country team was state runner-up and the men’s soccer team also finished second.
North Lincoln is third with 150 points, followed by Shelby (142.5) and Hillsborough Cedar Ridge (120).
In the 1-A classification, the North Carolina School of Science and Math captured the state crowns in both men’s soccer and men’s cross country while placing second in volleyball and women’s tennis. Those performances helped power NCSSM to the top spot among 1-A schools with 235 points. Hendersonville, which has won the most Cups all-time with 13, is in second with 172.5 points. Bearcat teams scored playoff points in four fall sports, including a second-place finish in men’s soccer and third among 1-A teams in women’s golf.
Lake Norman Charter, led by a state championship in women’s cross country and second place finish in men’s cross country, tallied 160 points for third in the standings. Kernersville Bishop McGuinness, the defending Cup champion, is fourth with 152.5 points and Riverside-Martin fifth at 115.
Wells Fargo Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wells Fargo Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer then eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wells Fargo Cup points.
Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.
Wells Fargo Cup standings are announced three times each school year: once after the fall, again after the winter sports, and then concluding with the winner after the spring sports season ends in June. The engraved silver cups are presented during NCHSAA Day activities at UNC-Chapel Hill each fall.
