On this day in history in the NCHSAA, Pat Best died suddenly at the age of 54. Best was the principal at Goldsboro High School and was serving as president of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors at the time of his passing. The NCHSAA Athletes of the Year awards are named in his memory.

On this day in history in the NCHSAA, Fuquay-Varina and Southern Durham tallied 141 total points in an NCHSAA football game. Fuquay outlasted Southern Durham in a wild 83-58 contest.
