MUDGE TO FACE CACHA IN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP; DOUBLES TEAMS FROM R.J. REYNOLDS, MILLBROOK TO COLLIDE IN FINALS
RALEIGH– The championship pairings are set for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s tennis championships at Millbrook Exchange Park.
Finals are scheduled for Saturday morning at nine o’clock. Three rounds were played on Friday, with the semifinal round Friday afternoon including four tough three-set matches.
In singles, 2009 champ Robbie Mudge of Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds will play Roman Cacha of Raleigh Athens Drive for the championship. Mudge was unable to compete in last year’s tournament due to injury.
Mudge outlasted Peter McDonald of East Chapel Hill, last year’s runner-up, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals while Cacha was eliminating Landon Kinsey of Greensboro Page, rallying from a set down to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Both earlier won a pair of matches.
The R.J. Reynolds doubles team of Paul Yamane and Jack Riazzi won their semifinal Friday afternoon in amazing fashion, dropping the first set at love to the East Chapel Hill pair of Sam Weissler and Kassim Alani. But then Yamane and Riazzi stormed back to win the second set at love and then win a third-set tiebreaker to ttake the match 0-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7).
The Reynolds duo will face Quinn Carmean and Sean Carmean of Raleigh Millbrook for the championship. Carmean and Carmean defeated Sammy Kohl and Alex Gaines of Wilmington New Hanover in three sets in the semifinals to advance.
