Association Spotlight: Black History Month

During the month of February, in honor of Black History Month, the NCHSAA website will feature information about African-Americans who have made major contributions to the great tradition of high school sports in our state. We hope you find these both entertaining and informative.

DONALD BONNER

Donald Bonner’s career has included involvement in athletics from a number of different perspectives and positions.

A native of Robeson County, he began his teaching and coaching career at two high schools in South Carolina. He returned to North Carolina in 1961 and successfully coached both men’s and women’s basketball as well as baseball at three different high schools. Bonner went on to become a principal and then work in the central office of the Robeson County schools.

He served as a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors and was president of the NCHSAA in 1983-84 as well as serving the Association in many other capacities. He also was elected to serve in the North Carolina General Assembly.

Donald joined the ranks of the NCHSAA Hall of Fame in 1993.
