Association Spotlight: Clary Medal

One of the special scholarship opportunities offered by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association is named for a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

One male and one female student-athlete are selected annually to receive the Clary Medal, named in memory of W.C. Clary, an outstanding game official who for many years served as the executive secretary of the Western North Carolina High School Activities Association.

The awards go to graduating seniors at NCHSAA member schools who have participated on at least two varsity school-sponsored athletic teams in two different sports during their high schools careers and are on an athletic team as seniors. The students must also maintain a grade point average of 3.2 or higher during their academic careers, during their first seven semesters (due to the deadline of the award the eighth semester cannot be factored in.

Students must also submit an essay specifically addressing how athletic participation has influenced their decision making.

Deadline to submit materials is March 31, 2011. The nomination form is found on the NCHSAA web site front page, under the drop down menu Scholarship/Awards. Questions may be directed to Mary Vrnak in the NCHSAA offices at (919) 240-7371.
