INGRAM, KIRK TIED FOR LEAD AFTER 18 HOLES; ATHENS DRIVE HAS ONE SHOT TEAM ADVANTAGE
PINEHURST –Golfers from Winston-Salem Mount Tabor and North Mecklenburg sit tied for the individual lead after Monday’s opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number one.
Kristi Ingram of Mount Tabor and Katie Kirk of North Mecklenburg, both seniors, had one-over par 73’s and share the lead after 18 holes. Freshman Victoria Allred of Pfafftown Ronald Reagan is third, just one shot back after a sizzling 34 on the back nine, while Sarah Bae of Athens Drive and Gabriela Chaloupkova of Davie County are tied for fourth at 75. Bae tied for second in last year’s tournament.
The course is set at par 72 and a 5,713-yard layout for the championship.
Allison Emrey of Charlotte Ardrey Kell, who finished second last year and won it all in 2008, had a 77 and is currently tied for ninth.
Defending champion Athens Drive recorded a team score of 240 and holds a slim one-shot over Ardrey Kell, with Reagan just five shots off the pace. Davie County is fourth at 250 and Charlotte Myers Park fifth at 251.
The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 78 golfers and 13 teams are competing in the two-day, 36-hole event.
The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at 8:15 Tuesday morning.
Wendy’s is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program. This is the eighth year of NCHSAA classified women’s golf championships and the 30th year for state championship competition in the sport.
