Defending Doubles Champs Move Closer To 2-A Title

DEFENDING DOUBLES CHAMPS MOVE CLOSER TO TITLE

CARY– Defending doubles champions McKenna and Kalli Karas of Waxhaw Cuthbertson stayed alive in their pursuit of a second straight state crown in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A women’s tennis tournament championships Friday at the Cary Tennis Center.

The Karas sisters won a pair of matches in straight sets, dropping only four games, and will take on Ashe County”s Courtney Bowers and Lizzie Hanes in the semifinals. The Rinaldo sisters Claire and Anne of East Lincoln, who are in the state semifinals for the second straight year, will play Salisbury’s Joy Loeblein and Erika Nelson.

In singles semifinal action, Kate Power of Kill Devill Hills First Flight plays Shelby’s Hillary Lutz and Hannah Marion of Hillsborough Cedar Ridge is slated to face Salisbury’s Katelyn Story. Three of the four advanced with convincing straight set victories Friday while Marion won her first match in straight sets and then moved on via default.

Semifinals are scheduled for Saturday morning at 9 am with the winners advancing to the state championship matches later in the day.
