WEDDINGTON, ASHEVILLE ADVANCE MULTIPLE PLAYERS
BURLINGTON–Weddington and Asheville both advanced a singles player and a doubles team into the semifinals after Friday’s action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women”s tennis tournament championship at the Burlington Tennis Center.
MacKenzie LaSure of Asheville, last year’s singles runner-up, and the sister doubles duo of Taylor Theodossiou and Alix Theodossiou of Asheville both advanced, while Weddington moved singles player Jasmine Gabriel and doubles pair Sarah Carroll and Kindell Schmitt into Saturday morning semifinals.
LaSure, who had a bye in the opening round and played only one match Friday, will face Kayla Price of Charlotte Harding in one semi while Gabriel will take on Masey DeMoss of Mayodan Dalton McMichael.
The Asheville and Weddington doubles teams will play one another Saturday, with the Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons pair of Lauren Brooker and Caroline Smith battling Rachel Tomchin and Grace Deering of Charlotte Catholic in the other semifinal.
Brooker and Smith lost only one game in four sets in their two Friday victories.
Semifinals will start Saturday morning at 9 am with the winners advancing to the state championship matches later in the day.
