BURLINGTON- A couple of freshmen and the defending state champion were among those winning two matches on Friday to advance in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A tennis tournament championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Defending champ Kyle Johnson of Charlotte Catholic swept his matches in straight sets, dropping only three games, and he’ll face freshman Chaz Fitzpatrick in one semifinal. Freshman Eric Greene will take on Weddington’s Dallas Croom in the other single semifinal. Both of them won their Friday matches in straight sets, with Croom beating regional champ Justin Dixzn of Fred T. Foard 6-3, 6-3.

Three of the four doubles teams advancing to the state semifinals earned regional championships last weekend. The Western Alamance pair of Greg Patterson and Rajiv Dinakaran is the only non-regional champ in the semifinals, and they had to knock off Rocky Mount’s Miguel Valdez and Gavin Stone in the quarterfinals to advance.

MIDEAST REGIONAL PLAYERS DOMINATE IN NCHSAA STATE MEN’S 4-A TENNIS TOURNAMENT

RALEIGH–Players from one regional dominated play on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s tennis tournament championships at the Millbrook Exchange Park.

The four singles players that advanced to Saturday’s semifinals were the four representatives from the NCHSAA Mideast Regional, but one piece of major news occurred before the tournament began. Defending singles champion Robbie Mudge of Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds was forced to withdraw due to a foot injury.

Peter McDonald of East Chapel Hill will face Raleigh Broughton’s James Coxe in one semifinal Saturday morning while Sam Weissler of East takes on Mideast champion Wesley Barrett of Apex. Weissler, the number-four player from that regional, knocked off West Regional champ Steve Lake of Watauga in the opening round.

In doubles, three of the four semifinalists are also from that Mideast Regional, paced by the Northern Durham pair of Pierce Hoover and Robert Jenkins, the regional champs who won both their Friday matches in straight sets. Hoover and Jenkins will face Will Albright and Mitchell Lewis of Greensboro Grimsley, the only semifinalist in either singles or doubles not from the Mideast Regional.

The top four in singles and doubles advance from each regional to the state tournament.

Action is set to begin at 9:00 on Saturday morning, with the semifinals and finals scheduled to move to Millbrook High School in Raleigh. Wendy’s is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.
