Gunter Rolls To Second Consecutive Crown In NCHSAA 1a/2a/3a Golf

SOUTHERN PINES— Junior Courtney Gunter of Indian Trail Porter Ridge won her second consecutive state title on Tuesday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 1A/2A/3A women’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.

Gunter had the only even par round on the final day of play with a 71, giving her a 36-hole total of 145. That was good for a whopping 11-stroke margin over runner-up Laura Kinsman of Cameron Union Pines.

Three golfers ended deadlocked for third, with 83’s on the opening day and 75’s in the second round. Amanda D’Ostroph of Union Pines, Allison Lee of Salisbury and Amy Otteson of Wilson Fike were all in at 158.

Jennifer Crow of Havelock was just one shot out of first after Monday’s play but had an 86 on Tuesday to wind up tied for seventh overall.

Union Pines held off a strong surge from Wilson Fike to take the team championship by four shots, recording a 490 to 494 for Fike, which had the best team round of the tournament with a 241 total on Tuesday. Salisbury, in second place after 18 holes, wound up third at 502 but nobody else was within 60 shots of the leaders.

The best three scores of a team counted toward the team totals, and a total of eight teams and 77 golfers competed in the event, the fifth year that a separate 1A/2A/3A championship has been held. Par was 71 on the 5,611-yard layout.

Play started 30 minutes later than the original tee times indicated due to frost. Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
