Hoadley Of Union Pines Is 3-A Individual Leader; Rockingham County Atop Team Standings

FOX FIRE VILLAGE– Sophomore Robert Hoadley of Cameron Union Pines was the only player to break par on Monday on the first day of the 22nd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s golf championships at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club.

The championship is being held on the East Course at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club, a par-72, 6500-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.

Hoadley, who finished in a tie for seventh in last year’s championships, had a two-under par 70, two shots ahead of Drew Page of Waynesville Tuscola. Five golfers are deadlocked at 75, five shots off the pace, and another nine golfers recorded 76’s on Monday.

Rockingham County put together a 305 total to hold a two-stroke lead over Southeast Gulford and Gastonia Forestvilew in the team standings. Hickory is fourth at 313, eight shots back. Tuscola, the defending team champ, is tied for sixth after 18 holes.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action will resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.

Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
