DEFENDING CHAMP EAST SURRY HOLDS LEAD IN NCHSAA 1-A MEN’S GOLF
BUIES CREEK– Defending team champion East Surry holds a nine-shot advantage of the field after the first day of the 10th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s golf championships at the Keith Hills Country Club.
The championship is being contested on the Keith Hills II course, a par-72, 6500-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.
East Surry, seeking its third straight title, recorded a 297 for first place, nine shots ahead of North Johnston. Bishop McGuinness of Kernesville is in third with a 316 and Hampstead Topsail fourth at 318.
The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
Justin Goforth of West Montgomery and East Surry’s Jon Weldon shot one-under 71’s to capture the top spot in the individual standings. Tommy Gibson of East Surry and Taylor Zimmerman of Elkin are knotted at second, just one stroke back, and a trio of golfers are in with 73’s.
The defending individual champ, junior Johnson York of East Surry, is in a three-way tie for 10th at 76, five shots back.
Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
A total of 76 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action will resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.
Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.

WRIGHT LEADS INDIVIDUAL STANDINGS,
DEFENDING TEAM CHAMP LEDFORD ON TOP IN NCHSAA
SOUTHERN PINES — Brandon Wright of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons fired a two-under par 70 on Monday to take the individual lead after the first day of the 22nd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s golf championships at the Long Leaf Golf and Country Club.
The championship is being contested on Longleaf’s par-72 layout set at 6,543 yards for the NCHSAA event. Fog delayed the start of play on Monday morning by 45 minutes.
Wright is one shot ahead of Ledford’s Jeff Boyan and two shots in front of a quintet of golfers, which includes defending medalist Will Collins of Salisbury, knotted at even-par 72.
Two-time defending team champion Ledford, with five of its six team members shooting 77 or better, put together a 294 team score and has a three-stroke advantage over Cardinal Gibbons, which was runner-up to Ledford a year ago. East Davidson is in third at 306 and West Henderson is a shot behind East in fourth.
The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
