Greene Central Breaks Through After 7 Straight Runner-up Finishes

BURLINGTON– Greene Central made its eighth consecutive appearance in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association women’s dual team tennis championships one to remember.

Greene Central, after finishing as state runner-up for the last seven years, broke through to win the state crown over Salisbury by a 5-2 count in the state 2-A finals at the Burlington Tennis Center on Saturday.

Greene Central took four of the six singles matches and then clinched it when the number-two doubles team of Christi Murphy and Ashley Harrell won their match.

Salisbury wound up with a 21-3 record while Greene Central finished at 24-1 under head coach Donald Clark.

In 4-A,defending champion Greensboro Page knocked off powerful Raleigh Broughton 6-0 in a battle of unbeaten teams, sweeping all of the matches in straight sets.

Page ran its record to 20-0 in beating Broughton for the second straight year in the final. Broughton was making its 11th consecutive appearance in the state championship match.

Jamestown Ragsdale took the 3-A crown, blanking Pikeville C.B. Aycock 6-0. Ragsdale completed a perfect 21-0 campaign while Aycock finished 20-2.

North Stokes downed Hampstead Topsail 5-1 in the 1-A final in a rematch of last year’s championiship, losing only at the number six singles. North Stokes earned its 20th dual team victory against no losses this season while Topsail dropped to 10-1.
