Top Seeds Advance In 3-A Tennis

BURLINGTON— The top seeds in both singles and doubles earned their way into the semifinals after Friday action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s tennis championships at the Burlington Parks and Recreation Tennis Center.

In singles, top-seeded Emily Mauser of Hickory won both of her matches in straight sets and will face Belmont South Point’s Lauren Sessoms in one Saturday morning semifinal. Mauser has been the 3-A runner-up in singles in each of the last two years.

Cameron Chatman of Jamestown Ragsdale and junior Winnie Quick of Greensboro Dudley will square off in the other semi. Quick won three of her four sets on Friday at love.

In doubles, the top seeded duo of Emily Carriel and Sara Fender of Gastonia Forest View had a big struggle in their first round match, dropping the first set and then hanging on to win the second set tiebreaker 14-12 before vanquishing Stephanie Meiners and Kelly Santore of Porter Ridge.

Carriel and Fender will battle Erin Hosterman and Rebecca Rhoney of Hickory St. Stephens in one semifinal. The Crutchfield sisters, Nadia and Kiara of Jamestown Ragsdale, will battle the Charlotte Catholic team of Caroline Kuttner and Alley Leahy in the other semifinal.

The championship matches are scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
