Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings for winter sports in the Wells Fargo Cup competitions for the 2013-14 academic year.
The Wells Fargo Cup is sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA. The award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Cup program is in its 35th year.
Defending champion Cary Green Hope sits atop the 4-A standings with Cornelius W.A. Hough in second place, while defending Cup champion Cardinal Gibbons paces the 3-A group of schools. Carrboro holds the top position among 2-A schools, with Kernersville Bishop McGuinness and Raleigh Charter sitting one-two in the 1-A classification standings.
Green Hope, which added to its total primarily by winning the men’s swimming crown again and finishing third in women’s swimming, increased its tally to 355 points and maintains a 100-point margin over Hough in the 4-A classification. Hough was second in women’s swimming, fourth in men’s swimming and also placed in the top eight in dual team wrestling.
Apex and Winston-Salem Mount Tabor are tied for third with 250 points, with Apex buoyed by a pair of fifth-place finishes in both men’s and women’s indoor track as well as winning the men’s 4-A basketball championship.
Cardinal Gibbons enjoyed another solid season this winter, capturing second place in 3-A men’s swimming and third in women’s swimming while placing second among 3-A teams in women’s indoor track. The Crusaders brought their total points to 430. Marvin Ridge has 397.5 points for second place, earning playoff points in four sports. The Marvin Ridge highlights include state championships in both men’s and women’s indoor track and women’s swimming.
Chapel Hill, state champion in both women’s basketball and men’s swimming to go with the number-two position in women’s swimming, is in third with 335 points, followed by Weddington (300) and then Northern Guilford (217.5).
Carrboro maintained its lead in the 2-A standings on the strength of a state championship in men’s swimming, a second-place finish in women’s swimming and placing in the top four in dual team wrestling, giving the Jaguars a total of 357.5 points. The North Carolina School of Science and Math holds on to second with 355 points, with a state title in men’s swimming, a second-place finish in women’s swimming and taking third among 2-A schools in men’s indoor track as the winter season highlights.
Lake Norman Charter, which was the Cup champion in the 1-A classification last year before moving up in realignment, is third with 297.5 points, followed by Salisbury (245) and Shelby (242.5).
In the 1-A classification, Bishop McGuinness took top honors in two sports, including its ninth consecutive women’s basketball crown and the top 1-A finish in men’s swimming, to help compile 367.5 points and stay in first place. Raleigh Charter, with the top finish among 1-A schools in women’s swimming and third in men’s swimming, has 257.5 points, good for second. Elkin is third with 232.5 points, earning playoff points in three sports, and Community School of Davidson holds fourth at 212.5, with its biggest winter season performance the top spot among 1-A schools in women’s indoor track.
Wells Fargo Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wells Fargo Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer then eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wells Fargo Cup points.
Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.
Wells Fargo Cup standings are announced three times each school year: once after the fall, again after the winter sports, and then concluding with the winner after the spring sports season ends in June. The engraved silver cups are presented during NCHSAA Day activities at UNC-Chapel Hill each fall.
