3-A NCHSAA MEN’S TENNIS—FIRST DAY
SEMIFINALS SET FOR NCHSAA 3-A TENNIS ON FRIDAY
BURLINGTON— Waxhaw Marvin Ridge and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons dominated Thursday’s action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s tennis championships at the Burlington Parks and Recreation Tennis Center.
Both schools advanced two doubles teams into the semifinals and each has a singles player still alive in the tournament.
Marvin Ridge and Cardinal Gibbons will collide in both doubles matches Friday morning, with defending 3-A doubles champ Matt Galush and Noah Constantine of Gibbons taking on Avanish Madhavaram and Hayden Wohlfarth of Marvin Ridge. The other match pits Jim Mantyh and Kyle Fitzgerald of Gibbons against the Marvin Ridge duo of Andrew Viditz-Ward and Liam Florian.
Defending singles champ Robert Kelly of Gibbons has a semifinal date with George Lovitt of Marvin Ridge. Kelly lost only five games in four sets on Thursday while Lovitt won one match by default and was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in the other.
One of the best matches of the day occurred in the singles quarterfinals where Anthony Brennan of Swansboro ousted Austin Allen of Asheboro, rallying to win in a high level three-setter, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3.
Semifinals are scheduled to start at 9 am Friday morning, with the championship matches following later in the day.

4-A NCHSAA MEN’S TENNIS—FIRST DAY
RALEIGH WAKEFIELD HAS EXCELLENT FIRST DAY IN NCHSAA 4-A TENNIS
RALEIGH – Raleigh Wakefield had an outstanding day on Thursday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s tennis championships at the Millbrook Exchange Park.
Bo Boyden of Wakefield, the 2013 4-A singles runner-up, rolled to a pair of convincing victories while both Wakefield doubles teams advanced to the semifinals.
Boyden, who lost only four games in a pair of straight set wins, will face Bennett Crane of Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds in one singles semifinal. Clayton’s Klein Evans, who dropped just two games in his two straight set victories, battles Raleigh Millbrook’s Logan Weber in the other semifinal.
Boyden advanced to the semis by rallying past the 2013 runner-up in the 3-A classification, Riley Brosnan of Charlotte Catholic, coming back to win 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-0. Catholic moved from 3-A to 4-A during realignment, putting Brosnan in the 4-A event.
The Wakefield team of Jensen Martin and Phil Lauture will take on John Riazzi and Nicholas McDaniel of Winston-Salem R.J Reynolds in one semifinal. The other Wakefield pair, Andrew Belonga and Nico Grewe, faces Hardy Brown and Naveed Foroudi of Greensboro Page. The Page team outlasted Noah Milliken and Chase Horton of Wilmington Hoggard in three sets in the quarterfinals.
Semifinals are scheduled to start at 9 am Friday morning, with the finals following later in the day.
