FAYETTEVILLE—A Gray’s Creek High School softball player has earned a spot in the North Carolina High School Association Record Book and fell just short of setting a new state record.
Gray’s Creek standout Sarah Watson had a tremendous season, finishing with a total of 61 runs batted in, good for second place all-time on the RBI list.
Dallas Heaton of Eastern Randolph holds the state record with 63, established in 2010.
Watson entered her final game with a chance to set the mark but was held without an RBI in a season-ending 6-4 loss to Southern Guilford in the first round of the NCHSAA playoffs. She actually had no official plate appearances as she walked once and was twice hit by a pitch.
The Fayetteville Observer had been tracking her approach to the state record.
