NCHSAA 2-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP–GAME ONE
MIDWAY EXPLODES FOR 10-3 VICTORY IN FIRST GAME OF 2-A SERIES
GREENSBORO— Midway exploded for six runs in the fifth inning on Friday night to blow open a close game and take a 10-3 victory over Claremont Bunker Hill in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A baseball championship series at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The Raiders pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of five Bunker Hill errors en route to the win.
Bunker Hill had grabbed a 3-1 lead in the opening inning, and then the Raiders came back with two in the second to tie it before erupting in the fifth.
Designated hitter Austin Hardison led the way for Midway with three hits in four at-bats and drove home two runs. Tyler Pope had two hits and a pair of runs batted in for the winners and number-nine hitter Troy Spell had an excellent night with two hits.
Justin Setzer and Jordan Eckerd each had two hits for the Bears.
Dylan Hardison went the route for the Raiders, moving his record to 10-0 on the season. Colton Chapman (12-2), the first of four Bunker Hill pitchers, got the loss.
Midway, in the championships for the second consecutive year, won its eighth straight and ran its record to 26-4. The Bears fell to 26-6 and had a seven-game winning streak snapped.
Game two of the best-of-three is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday. This is the 98th year for baseball championships in the NCHSAA.

TOPSAIL TAKES 5-3 WIN OVER PIEDMONT IN 3-A GAME ONE
ZEBULON – A two-run single in the sixth inning by Clark Cota broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Hampstead Topsail to a 5-3 triumph over Monroe Piedmont on Friday night in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.
Cota, who pitched four innings, and Jake Madole had two hits apiece for Topsail, while Danny Wilson hit safely three times, including a pair of doubles.
Topsail took a 3-0 lead in the third, with key hits a two-run single by Sam Luchansky and an RBI-single by Madole. But Piedmont battled back to tie the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Hunter Jones that scored Colton Greene.
Luchansky was the winning pitcher with Trent Hansley, an East Carolina signee, coming on to get the save in the seventh, striking out the side. David Nash got the loss.
Topsail, making its third appearance in the last seven years in the NCHSAA championships, improved its record to 20-8 while Piedmont slipped to 21-9. Hunter Jones was two for four at the plate for the Panthers.
Game two of the best-of-three is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. This is the 98th year for baseball championships in the NCHSAA. The Raleigh Sports Consortium and Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau serve as host city sponsors for the championship.
